It could be leaking injectors. That much soot might be an indication that you're running rich, which I guess leaking injectors could do. Does it only happen on cold starts?

The soot is just leftover carbon that is mixing with condensation water in your exhaust and it gets spit out on the cold start. I'm no engine/exhaust wizard, but I would venture that you might have leaky turbo seals which are leaving more soot in the exhaust than is normal. Have your turbos ever been rebuilt/replaced?

I remember from another thread you said you were on original index 01 injectors, the really early ones that last a long time. They could be leaking, but I don't know enough about diagnosing them to know if that might be the cause.

I'm on original turbos. I did take the cats off the turbos about a month ago, when I did engine mounts & MMP 1.75" inlets.

I'm very sure that the V clamps were installed correctly and tight.

Idk......

150,000 miles on index 1 injectors. Maybe it's time to think about getting index 11 or 12.

I think that's why you're seeing it. It's pretty common in turbo cars to have noticeably more soot when you remove cats from the system. It might not be a problem at all, though. Does the car run fine otherwise?

An an unrelated note, how do you like the inlets? Stock location? I'm trying to decide whether to get some for my car.

I love the MMP inlets. There is a DIY on YouTube that is very precise. I even made some commentary regarding tips & tricks for this DIY, on this forum, and the YouTube site where the video is.

I am going to install MMP Outlets this week sometime.

The car runs awesome. No codes etc.

Idk

The best place to purchase the MMP inlets is on eBay. You can bid on them. Typically, they will accept $189.00 plus shipping. The vendor is extreme power house. I got the 1.75". I don't know how on earth one can put 2" on the n54.

I am not seeing any of these symptoms -

- Starting issues.
- Poor idle.
- Failed emissions
- Poor Performance.
- Engine does not reach full RPM.
- Increased fuel consumption.
- Rough engine performance.
- Surging and bucking under various throttle loads.

I had same exact issue but I also had rough idle, real nasty foul smell. Turns out it was my pre-cat 02 sensors. There only good for 100-120K miles so you might be overdue. I'm not mechanic but what about changing out your PCV valve or at least cleaning it? Those also have a lifespan.

I changed out the pre-cats around 30,000 miles ago & just did the post-cats last month.

I think the turbo seals might need to be replaced. There is a ring that seats inside the turbo (from what I have read). There is not a gasket on the outer portion on either the cat or turbo.

That's the only thing I can think of. My injectors are original to the car 151,000 miles on them, but my car is pre-03/07. I have an 01/07. So, my injectors were never recalled.

i would double check the logs if your running mhd or jb4. you could be correct on the turbo seals.

Usually leaky injectors, can create misfires, difficult cold starts and bad mpg, so i doubt its injectors but i would put it on the to do list eventually.

Our 2007 withy Kittyless downpipes is exactly the same. The increased soot mirrored when we changed out the downpipes. Other than the soot no issues at all.

Hmm. I have oem cats. I did have to disconnect the cats from the turbos & exhaust when I did inlets & motor mounts a month ago. I used BMS seals for the cat to the exhaust pipe.

Again the car runs great. Increase in soot is really odd to me.

Did you sort this getting rough idle at start up and tons of soot shooting out the exhaust

When I had black soot coming out the exhaust, I had just installed silicone 1.75" outlets. On the rear outlet, which goes to the rear turbo, there is a spot you can put an OEM valve/ sensor that's about 1 1/2" wide. This particular valve/ sensor sits on top near the fire wall. This valve/sensor kept popping out and allowing excessive air travel to the rear turbo. Funny thing is though I didn't get a CEL.

At any rate, I found a way to better secure it, and I haven't had a problem since.

Wait, you mean inlets, not outlets, right? Either way, how in the world did that make such a difference?
