E90 Transfer Case Actuator
Hi all, 2011 328xi auto 110k
Two nights ago, while driving I heard a howling sound, as if a plane was accelerating from the rear passenger wheel. At first I thought soemthing was on the tire, but that wasn't the case. The next day, The 4X4, ABS, yellow brake light and traction control light came on. I assumed I might have to replace the rear speed sensor, but the howling sound and slight jerks while turning tells me it's the transfer case actuator. My question is, can I drive the car if I unplug the actuator until I get a new actuator, or will I damage more parts driving the car with the actuator unplugged? Unfortunately I have to drive the car, but I don't want to damage other parts. I did some research and I've read people disconnecting the actuator and still driving. I'm not worried about the power going to the front wheels. I'm worried about damaging other parts. I would greatly appreciate someone's advice on what I should do. I'm wondering if disconnecting the actuator will eliminate the howling sound since it's not getting power and the ECU is not telling it to do its job. Thanks in advance.. |

Pay for x-delete while you wait. I just replaced my actuator, but had none of those symptoms. Mine made two loud clicks when I shut the car off. The final nail in the coffin was the God awful sound on start up, with a light on the dash to follow.
Went to the junkyard and pulled one. I will say, junkyard pjll was easy bc it had no exhaust. Your car will be a PIA with the main bolt on the support bracket. Absolute nightmare, but I got it. Prepare to have a quart of TC fluid as well. |

Since it will taker a bit for me to get a replacement actuator, I was wondering if I can still drive the car with the actuator unplugged. Will unplugging the actuator cause damage to other parts?

Just spend the $150 on xdelete. Well worth it. No jacking up the car or messing with anything.
Only good thing about unplugging it is to see if it is your issue. |
