handbrake adjustment

I watched a few vids but none have the answer I am looking for.

I just replaced rear discs and pads/shoes. I adjusted them by turning the adjuster inside the drums until engages and then turning it the other way the same amount on both sides. But I forgot about some release mechanism under the handbrake leaver inside the car. TBH I don't understand how it all works.

I have two questions:

1. Should I redo the adjustment with the release mechanism disengaged or it makes no difference?

2. My handbrake leaver travel remained the same. It's still has too much travel distance when engaging the handbrake. Can I reduce it by half using the adjustment mechanisms or does it require a new cable?

1. Yes, you need to redo it, properly.
2. Probably fine, see 1.

Any advice how to compress that spring under the handbrake? I am pressing as hard as I can but it's not hooking in. Also, pictures 3 and 4 in that Pelican Parts guide, are they describing the same step or 2 separate steps? It not clear to me.

Be sure the handbrake lever is fully released when you're trying to compress the spring. It takes a bit of force, but it's not crazy at all.

Yeah, the steps do overlap a fair amount.

I managed to press it in eventually, but I have to say it was hard as f#ck. And I am not a weak person. But it made no difference. The handbrake travel remained the same...
