I think the design is just cheaper and easier to manufacture. The special edition STi's sold in japan have equal length headers, and many of the aftermarket headers are el as well.

Interiors are completely subjective. When I was planning my move to BMW years back, I almost turned away due to the uninviting interior. To this day I feel our interiors are quite lacking, very blah. Wish we had even a bit of the WOW factor of the Audi interiors. But I drive a BMW not for performance or interior...but for its all around driveability and class.

Never mind just found this
The new 5 Series Gran Turismo is equipped with BMW’s Brake Energy Regeneration system. This system controls the times at which the alternator charges the battery. In the Gran Turismo, the brakes charge the vehicle when it’s decelerating or braking; otherwise, the alternator freewheels, drawing virtually no power from the engine. An electronically controlled clutch, somewhat similar to that used with the air-conditioning compressor, is added to engage and disengage the alternator. Pretty smart … I wonder what the alternator costs to replace though. http://www.automoblog.net/2009/05/25...-gran-turismo/ Pretty neat...I'd rather have a KERS button tho... |

I'm reading and learning that the N55 won't be nearly as tuner friendly, which sucks.
And unlike the N54 that gets 70+ hp from a tune only, it will be lucky to get half that amount on the N55 from tune only. That really sucks for the mod crazed enthusiasts that have made the N54 powered cars such a big success over the past 3 years. But clearly BMW has to protect the upcoming TT 6 in the 2013 M3 (which will probably be a 3.3 liter TT V6, or essentially their current 4.4 TT V8 with 2 cylinders lopped off). However, I would of hoped for a 3.3-3.4 liter I6 with TT's making 420+ hp rather than the 3.3 V6 which will probably be 405-410 hp (though it should be faster than current 414 hp 4.0 V8 M3 since the new car should weigh 100 lbs less, and have 50-60 lbs feet of torque more as well). |
