Bloody piss take they're only stepping up now this has been around a while. It happened to me few weeks back. Luckily for me the cable had come loose while the car was parked. I ended up fixing it myself.

Is there any way of telling (by VIN or by Build Date) exactly which cars are affected?

Try here - https://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/default.asp

Though I'm not convinced that is totally up to date so you could try here too - https://www.themotorombudsman.org/vehicle-recalls

Might just put a call into BMW to be sure.....

Story says:
"BMW 1 Series, the 3 Series, the Z4 and its X1 petrol and diesel models made between March 2007 and August 2011."

Bit of a ball ache but at least it's a free fix.

Amazing nothing has happened so far if the car is potentially affected!

Mine was made May 2009 so it's almost 10 years with this potential fault and 80,000 miles.

Still some will be twice the mileage and 2 years older...

Which part are they going to replace, is it that red power lead they were showing or is it the silver box thing that was tin coated and not silver coated like the newer one's.

There's a dealership across the road where I live, so I just popped in this afternoon. They checked the database and found my car was on it and booked me in.

Mine's in for an MOT next week, so will ask them then. It's not self combusted since 2011, so hopefully another week won't matter.

What changed after August 2011, to make them not recall cars after that date?

Looking at the timelines mentioned, seems BMW became aware of the fault in 2011 and most likely adjusted the production run to address it.

This is quite common.

Must be one of the few occasions that owning an early 335i means that you don't have an issue

Interesting.

My 335i (bought from Sytner as an AUC 2 weeks ago) with a build date of February 2011 is not showing on the DVLA site, despite being within the affected dates.

My M3 (build date September 2012) is also not on there, but I wouldn't expect it to be.

Mine's not on either but I'm guessing that's because the work has already been done.

Could yours be the same?
