Remember that modeling off of T/S parameters only tell you how the low-end rolloff looks... midbass response of a woofer is not part of the output. Since cabin gain makes everything look good, your results DO vary.

completely understood, transfer function is not something new to me, nor is box design (I design higher end a/v systems and did 12volt for many years). Modeling can tell us if there are terrible peaks do to a mismatch of the driver to the oem enclosure in this case though... I am definitely making a pretty big assumption on the box volume, but from the pictures I've seen of them out of the car and the size of the frame rail that is supposedly uses as an extension of said enclosure, I'm pretty sure we aren't talking about much more than a .3-.4 ft3 box - not something like 1ft3... which can make the wrong speaker really ring due to the tiny box size. We stopped selling kicker before those midbasses came out, so I am unfamiliar with them, but I would guess they are more likely intended for free air use, and as such won't work all that well in a small ported box. Could be totally wrong though, that's why I hoped to find the t/s's to model them. Because the price is certainly appealing ($100 for the pair!), and kicker makes pretty decently built stuff. Not necessarily the highest SQ out there, but not bad either...

Here is the Crutchfield page on them. They are discontinued but at least you can see the specs on them. I also found this pic of the back side. Mounting depth is 2 5/16 I am not sure how much depth we actually have in the enclosures though. Any thoughts VP. I think Technic posted something about these a while back.

crutchfield doesn't have the thiele-small parameters for the kicker 8's...

those alpines look like they won' fit, they are 2" top mount depth, it's bottom mount that matters. And the magnet is very wide.

Garage List
I was just wondering, it says that I have 10 speakers, where are they all situated? I don't have the Logic 7 version. I see 2 bottom from door, 2 on top, 3 behind the back seat. Are there any in the back doors? Where's the subwoofer?

I have a 2006 325i

Dynaudio speakers will fit in this car as well.
MD102 in the tweets, esotar 430s in the door.

Under the seat, the 8" dyn is too hard to fit, but the 6.5" will fit (162gt will definitely fit with modding, esotar 650 should fit with modding as well).

If anyone is interested, I have a Focal 100 KRS set for sale

Does any one have any experience with Cliff Designs? I have an opportunity to get a smokin deal on a set of CD PX525C components brand new for dirt cheap. I don't want to buy them to find out they are junk. What are your opinions?

2.1" top mount depth is probably too deep. Never heard of CD. Retail price on woofersetc is listed as $99...... My advice would be to pass. If you want cheap AND good, go for MB Quart RUA213, but be prepared to get the dremel out.

The MD102 is a bitch, dont' expect snap-in fitment.

And I'm really not clear why you would use a 6.5 under the seat... can't we assume most 6.5" fit?

What would you recommend? The dyn mw172 and mw182 won't fit without major modding. I only need the driver to play midbass, since I will have a dedicated subwoofer and would like to stay with all Dynaudio.

I would say that using a 6.5" Dyne instead of a 9" Morel is kinda silly...but if you are really on the Dyne wagon, I have a used set of "MW170GT" (that's not the PN, but it explains exactly what it is - the stamped-frame 8" from the Dynaudio Volvo OEM systems - and NOT the VW systems). If you want to see if you can get a set new from a Volvo dealer, they are the only Dyne option I know of, and if you want to check out these used ones, I will send them to you cheap. PM me your email and I will send you pics.

I found a brand new set at eBay for $110 and replaced my SWS-8 with these SSMB8.

Installation:
- they fit the OEM enclusures only with a 0.5" spacer, as the wide magnet hits the sloped bottom of the enclosure. Therefore the grill has to use a spacer as well of about 0.25" and the carpet under the seat rail has to be cut or the woofer cone will hit it. Once the seats are installed it looks like factory, though.

Setup:
- the first thing noticed is that I have to set my PDX4.150 gain to minimum, compared with a 10 o'clock setting for the SWS-8. That much of a sensitivity these SSMB8 have over the SWS-8. Band pass setting in my bit one.1 is set now to 40-200Hz from 30-150Hz. Sub bass is now being handled exclusively by an ID10 sub in the trunk using VP Electricity's E90 enclosure.

Sound:
- these drivers sound much better and even louder than the SWS-8 at midbass all the way to 200Hz. There's a much better definition and impact of the whole bass spectrum with these midbass and the sub than what I used to have with the SWS-8 and the sub.

However, remove the sub and they do not sound as great as the SWS-8 alone. The sub punch with the SWS-8 still is better for me, and with some tuning it can fake some midbass as well. And that's what I can conclude between a SWS-8 and a midbass driver: the SWS-8 will sound great with a processor/EQ, nice sub punch and decent midbass. Remove the processor and the SWS-8 sucks at midbass, which is most of the complaints in this forum comes from. Use a dedicated midbass driver and it really sucks at subbass (the SSMB8 simply pops and cracks at anything in the 30Hz-40Hz range) but excel at midbass without a processor/EQ.

This the second SSMB8 installation (front doors in a 2007 VW MKV GTI was the first one) that I really like, and they don't disappoint at midbass. Just don't use them as subs...

Not a 'snap in' but certainly not difficult either. The sails can be done in about 20 mins or so. Think outside the box my friend.

I actually ended up trying one of the Morels. Threw one of them under a seat and left the Dyn under the other. The client (not knowing which) chose the Dyn 3 for 3. Low cutoff/steep slope and he loved it. Well 'til he went dual Esotar 6.5s per door !

Don, that's really not fair. I didn't say it was a bitch on DIYMA or EMSQ, I said it on what is largely a forum of inexperienced installers. Taking the MD housing off and desoldering the tabs is not foreign to me, but I don't want to get PM's asking me how to do it.

And that test is great and all, except those two drivers do need to be tuned differently. Any 8-9 in that enclosure benefits from EQ, and I woudnt doubt that a really 6-7 might sound good without EQ compared to a larger driver without EQ.

I'm sure it sounds great, and dual midbass in the door would sound good enough to make me consider it myself.

You are absolutely correct Ken ! My apologies for that, I have been so used to the DIYMA and 'other' forums that I didnt think before posting. For you and I it's a cake walk, though I can certainly see others scratching their heads for a bit. Force of habit my friend, especially when we have been around this stuff for so long !

I had to go the simple approach on this one. The guy owns an H900 and doesnt even want the controller ! See where I am coming from ?

Do it !

This should be a sticky, so bump for new members too.

I found the Focal 100KRS (aka 100KP, aka K2 Power 4KSlim) which should fit in both E92 and E90 cars for USD300 shipped (EUR199) brand new. I have seen these sell for $800 and $400+ used or so? If anyone is interested... let me know. Shipping from here to the US wouldnt be more than $50.

They come with tweeters, crossovers and some grills.

I need them since I blew a BSW mid+tweet. My fault - I wanted to see how loud it could get so I stepped outside the car and cranked it up all the way with the MS8 remote. I forgot that at 2 Ohms, my amp is rated at 320W/channel RMS - I was looking at the 4Ohms numbers. The heatshrink tubing went from black to some kind of whiteish black and there was some minor damage due to heat in that area. It only happened on the right, maybe because I had L7 on and set to driver, so more volume there? Anyway, I will comment back on the Focals once I put them in.
