least painful turbo options to eliminate wastegate rattle forever?

I saw a thread from a member here who did a top mount set up with an EFR turbo? (maybe) ... and he said it would have eliminated wastegate rattle fix (I assume because it used an external wastegate).

I like the appeal of this option but he also used the motiv kit which i guess had a lot of fitment issues.

SO ... what are some the best plug and play options to get a turbo set up which will eliminate wastegate rattle forever?

I am thinking that if I have to replace the turbos .. it better only be once, and doing it this way seems like it would make a lot of sense.

That’s fine with me. Are there any single turbo options that install realitvely easily? Cloud9blue was the member i was talking about. His kit required a good amount of fitting.

If there are kits that have been perfected from a fitment standpoint that would be nice

I believe he went with the AC Fabrication kit instead of Motiv.

Docrace and motiv are proven to be bolt in and reliable. Anything else really isnt guaranteed to be bolt on and go. Been many posts and stories of that.

+1 on DocRace and Motiv. Essentially Doc Race is a little cheaper than Motiv and a top mount single turbo. Motiv is a little more expensive bottom mount single turbo.

ACF top mount FTW it was slightly less expensive than doc race and they customized the kit exactly how I wanted.

this is the perfect setup https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1450450

but I am not into too much customization/hacking away at stuff.

I'd basically want a plug and play top mount ... with the turbo he used.

seems perfect IMO

I'm not aware of a top mount that fits an EFR. I really wanted a top mount EFR but I waited long enough and went with the precision gen 2. Which is what most run on this platform.

Any top mount will have 'normal' waste gates and will fix the rattle forever. Same as single turbo bottom mount etc.

A recommendation is that you run a Garrett or a Borg Warner turbo as they are water cooled. More reliable than precision turbos which are just oil cooled. Nothing crazy important but just for reliability if u run your car hard.

If he tracks the car he would want an water cooled turbo. For street performance the general consensus is it is overkill. He will also pay more for a water cooler turbo of comparable quality and size to the precision and more for the kit. There are only a few kits which offer a water cooled top mount turbo and there is not a lot of reviews on them. I doubt they fit as well as like a DR/Motiv/ACF kit.

I'm not saying he shouldn't do it, it just adds cost and complexity where he will not need it in street applications.

Just my 2 cents.

Oh and if you want to track your E9X you don't want the N54. The S65 is the superior engine for the track NA or FI imo.

I wouldn't be tracking the car ... it would be street only. Maybe drag strip occasionally ... fun hobby car/high potential daily

Then there is no need for a water cooled turbo. I would go as far as saying there is also no need for an EFR turbo if not racing. It's very cool tech but gains of the gamma ti wheel is mostly seen during gear changes that you would see on the track. Straight line pulls like you would see on the street or strip it's not worth the cost and complexity imo. Also, EFRs are larger than traditional turbos which is why it's so hard to fit them in the N54 engine bay top or bottom mount. Unless things have changed there are no plug n play EFR kits afaik from reputable vendors.

ACF was working on an EFR bottom mount, I wonder where that project left off.

On3 makes a decent kit also that includes everything needed to upgrade from stock to single. For what this kit offers, it's the best deal out there. This company also specializes kits for other models.

i've heard that they're pretty much hit or miss kits and that their turbos can go out within a few hundred miles.
