Failing fuel pump
I have a question about fuel pumps. My car dies whenever the fuel level gets to quarter way or just above quarter level. I add more fuel it runs fine. So should I replace the pump or is something else an issue? Please help.

What do your fuel pressures look like? Do you have good fuel pressure when you are low on fuel or does pressure directly correlate to the level of the fuel tank?

I don't have testing equipment to test the pressure levels...unfortunately. They must be low when the fuel is approximately a quarter tank. It can be the reason for no start or die out on the road...what does this mean? what is the most likely part that causes the failure...

Replace both your fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator. It's not uncommon for the nipple on the fuel pump to break when removing it anyway.

Next time it happens try opening the fuel cap. Your fuel tank may not be venting correctly causing a vacuum problem (too much vacuum) in the fuel tank. A quarter tank is around 4 gallons which is a lot of fuel, the fuel pump operation (i.e fuel pressure) is unaffected by the liquid volume in the tank. It will literally run dry.

Since the tank is "saddle-shaped" with a "Left Tank" on Left of Drive Shaft, and "Right Tank" on Right side of Drive Shaft, the "Jet Pump" and it's connective tubes have to function to pump fuel from Left Side to Right where Pump is located. You are effectively "Running out of gas, although you still have ~ 1/4 of total tank capacity (Gauge reading) in the Left Side. When you pour gas into the filler pipe, it goes to Right side where pump is located, and engine now starts/runs. There are "Fuel Level Sensors" on each side of tank. INPA/ISTA can display level signal from EACH Sensor. Fuel Gauge shows TOTAL of 2 sensors. So Gauge can show 1/4 tank 'cuz Left Tank is ~ half full, but Right Tank has NO fuel and pump draws air. If that is what is happening, then INPA would show Left side ~50% and Right side ~ 0%, due to Jet Pump malfunction. A hose/ tube in the tank may be disconnected, causing the issue. Cheap "fix" is just Refuel BEFORE Gauge gets to ~ 30%. George |
