Diagnosing P0012 and P0015 with some quirks

Hi everyone,

My wife drives a 2008 328xi, odometer just turned over 100k.

It has been throwing out P0012 and P0015 codes recently (camshaft a and b over-retarded in bank 1). After about 5 miles of driving, the car will start to give a misfire type feeling, especially when stopped at a light. A jerking, rpm dropping feeling.

A weird/interesting aspect to it, that makes little sense to me at the moment but will hopefully to someone, is that this seems to stop for a period of time when the gas tank is above 1/4 tank. SES light will even go off after gasoline is added.

I'm off to check the oil filter cap, as I've seen that a damaged cap could cause p0012 and p0015 codes.

Could anyone point me to a likely culprit, or offer some suggestions as to what to check in to? I have an ODBII reader if there is any specific data that could help diagnose the issue.

Thanks in advance!
