INPA - identify AGM or lead-acid battery?

Hi,

From many posts I can see how to read the AH for my battery. It is 90ah. But I can't tell if it is AGM. I see some posts where people are debating about their batteries - if it's white or black, something about wells, etc... But nothing definitive. Is there a way to identify AGM through INPA?

I would like to replace my battery without having to recode - so I need to buy the correct one.

Thanks,
Nachum

Not sure about INPA but use NCS Expert, run a basic job and have a look at your VO text file in the WORK folder.

You'll see an option similar to one below:

B046 BATT_46AH //46 Ah-Batterie
B055 BATT_55AH //55 Ah-Batterie
B070 BATT_70AH //70 Ah-Batterie
B080 BATT_80AH //80 Ah-Batterie
B090 BATT_90AH //90 Ah-Batterie
A070 BATT_AGM_70AH //70 Ah-AGM Batterie
A080 BATT_AGM_80AH //80 Ah-AGM Batterie
A090 BATT_AGM_90AH //90 Ah-AGM Batterie

If it starts with a B the CAS is programmed for a standard battery. If it's got an A it's programmes for an AGM.

I see in a file called FSW_PSW.TRC with these lines:
GETRIEBE_GAENGE
6_gaenge
KLASSE_BATTERIE
90ah
STROM_RUHE
wert_01

Looks like non-agm battery.

To get this, I chose F1 (VIN/ZCS/FA), then F3 (ZCS/FA f .ECU). Selected E89. It then seemed to read the VIN and some information from the car. Does this sound right?

Also, I tried to figure out how to run a basic job to get a VO output. Is this file the VO output? I was somewhat confused by that.

Looks like I'll be buying a 90AH non-agm battery.

Thanks again,
Nachum

if your battery have white or grey plastic casing and optical status indicator - it's lead acid

if you battery have black plastic casing and there is no status indicator - it's agm

Sorry I should of said. In work folder open FA.trc

This is your vehicle order (VO).

Worth checking what your car is codes for and if battery matches up.

I see B090 at the end of fa.trc, so it is standard 90AH. I can't find a battery with 720 CCA and 90AH for my car online. The recommended one at a battery dealer nearby is:
https://www.batteriesplus.com/batter...ional/sli49h8m

1. Can I use 100AH? The list includes 90 and 110, not 100.
2. Is it OK if I try and reprogram my car now for 100AH (if possible), and if I succeed go and buy the battery? I would like to learn how to do this, but if I can't, I'm just gonna pay them to install it. After I buy the battery and install it, I would perform the "register a new battery" process.

Thanks,
Nachum

Flame off folks. An AGM is a type of lead acid battery. The difference is that one type of battery is a "flooded cell" , meaning the zinc and lead plates swim around in cells full of liquid acid. This type is what all the posts refer to as a "lead acid" battery. In the other the acid is absorbed on glass mats (AGM). End. Flame back on.

After trying to find a 90ah standard battery and failing, I ended up buying an 80ah agm battery from a local store. I have tried to program the car to use the new battery and it doesn't seem to work.

I followed the ncsexpert directions from a PDF off 1addicts.com of modifying FSW_PSW.MAN and modifying the klasse_batterie to 80ah_agm, then doing coapireadsggetfswpsw and i get 'basic function perfect ended'. I then switched to sg_codieren and I execute the job. the system restarts. But when I reread using read ecu, it is still 90ah. I have even run the register new battery steps as well. Nothing changed.
I then tried this sequence (using FA_Write):

And I got this error:

Please help!
Thanks,
Nachum

thank you! this drives me nuts. one small correction. no zinc in a typical automotive battery (flooded or AGM). Positive plates are lead dioxide, negatives are sponge lead.

FSW_PSW.MAN and modifying the klasse_batterie to 80ah_agm
then sg_codieren and read again to confirm it's been changed. not basic functions getfswpsw, see?

then you can use tool32 to "reset" the learning

Thanks! I guess it's working now. INPA shows 81.00 for Ah. Guess it's working now.

Really appreciate the help!

One last thing. I just finished coding the battery type and registering the new battery. I then cleared codes in INPA. But this code still comes up:
5DF4 - Power supply too low

Is it possible I broke a sensor cable during installation of the battery? Should I wait a few days and clear / check again?

Thanks,
Nachum
