I might buy a 2009 M3. What options should I make sure it has to make this retrofit as inexpensive as possible?

Just picked up my car today and the new software works. I now have full apps and everything else is working perfectly for the first time since I picked the car up in August!!

I still can't understand why BMW released the software that required the FSC to enable the 6NR but did not provide dealers with tools to do it in cars with factory installed 6NR. The FSC for the 6NR retrofit should be available in January... |

I don't know either. That is the part that makes me the most angry. They were upset that the aftermarket was able to install the 6NR option so they rushed out a software update to disable that. Except in doing so they managed to disable all 6NR equipped vehicles including the ones that had it on originally.
Bottom line is that the software update should NEVER have been released for installation. I am still planning to have a sit down with the dealership management over these issues. I have been in contact with BMWNA as well. I expect to receive some type of compensation for the 4 months I have gone with either a car that was not completely functional or a rental. |

I'm actually pissed at BMW.
Why release a feature that is so hardwired to the vehicle order? Makes no sense. Then to disable the feature because aftermarket has it working?? Does BMW expect to have a aftermarket version? Where is it. Watch when the FSC codes come out in January we'll see if BMW has a retro-fit option. What will these codes do for BMW then? Will they let people retrofit? If not what do they care? Is the aftermarket stealing business from BMW for something they aren't retrofitting?
To begin with, why when I ordered my car that was built when 6NR was just becoming available that they refused to let me order it. Also, why when you buy Nav that cost as much as it does and on top of it get HK sound, you don't even get 6NF and 6NR. On top of that I bought 6FL and still no 6NR. Then I didn't get phone integration yet they install the wiring for 6NF???? Makes no sense. Give me a BMW OEM 6NR retrofit and I'll buy one. If BMW doesn't have one, they can't be mad that others provide it. Anyway If you get NAV, it should have all these features to begin with. Quote:

Correct, but some cars can have the basic base plate, which is not listed as the 6NF option in their specification and this will not work.
The BMW dealership will not install the 6NR if there is no 6NF option! All the conditions mentioned in my previous post have to be fulfilled for a dealership to retrofit the 6NR. |

Figures.
This is what I thought and was going down the 6NF route. If I can get 6NF coded then I have 6FL and the connections already there for 6NF.
So if 6NF is not on the original VO but added after, I assume you can still get the dealer to update. Any idea how much? I'll assume through some method, some aftermarket folks will be able to offer upgrade codes. Quote:

1) This does not list SA6VC Combox as one of the SA6NR requirements. Does that mean as part of the BMW SA6NR Retrofit they are adding SA6VC? 2) Why can / will BMW only retrofit post 03/11 F-Series Car builds as opposed to earlier builds going back from 9/10 when the SA6VC Combox was first introduced? What specifically makes these later builds upgradeable? 3) Can SA6NF Smartphone Integration be retrofitted?

2.It's the same as they do with many other retrofits - in theory the 6NR can be retrofitted in cars produced before 03/11, but then if the car is updated by a dealership the 6NR will be gone. It's all about the BMW strategy and the software BMW dealers use to program vehicles. 3.Officially it can't, but even if we do it and BMW really limits the availability of the 6NR activation codes to cars equipped with the "required" options then it won't help you. Patrys, thanks for the reply.

Apart from the above, if the vehicle software is the issue in MY 2011 builds prior to 03/11, I don't know why they wouldn't just offer as part of the official OEM 6NR Retrofit to also upgrade the vehicle software at the same time, prior to adding 6NR? In my novice mind, there would seem to have to be some hardware difference before the 3/11 builds and after. While I understand BimmerTech can retrofit 6NR with any existing Combox, are you sure that since the Combox P/N changed beginning 3/11, that a requirement for this newer Combox isn't what is determining the official OEM retrofit requirement as opposed to the requirement for the newer vehicle software? Quote:
As for "strategy", IMHO, it isn't a very good one that allows for one but not the other of two identically optioned MY 2011 vehicles to be upgraded. Obviously though BMW would like to sell as many 6NR Retrofits as possible, and they have a "good reason" for not doing so in the earlier builds, but as the consumer it's difficult to accept without explanation. Thankfully though, we have places like BimmerTech that can ease our pain. Quote:
6NF though frankly is another marketing failure as it was listed as "bluetooth smartphone integration" and I read of many individuals who did not order it thinking it was a Bluetooth accessory as nothing about its description indicates iPhone Video Out and Plugin functionality. Please forgive my stupidity and rant, and thanks for all your knowledge.

I do not know how credible that is, but I just received the following email from my good friend at the dealership:
"I talked to my friend in service, he made it sound that he can retrofit, you just need to buy the activation code. I need to check the cost of it." So, dealers are aware of that, and I should know more early next week. I will keep you posted. |

Right, but so far nobody even tried to get a price, nor we heard from a dealership, that in fact, they might even entertain such installs. Also, I might have found a way to buy an activation code. If I do, and the dealership refuses to retrofit, I will be taking to Partys (I don't have the smartphone integration option on my X3), so he can retrofit it WITHOUT one.
