Apparently, I'm a lucky one. I got (a) 188,294 miles before my water pump failed on a 3 hour trip back to Madison, WI from Iowa. I was having a great day, making plans with the wife on where we were going to dinner and I got a warning saying, "Warning, drive moderately or you will overheat" and ten seconds later, my 2006 330i sedan told me that I was overheating. I bought the car in 11/07 with 52k miles on it. This is the first time it has ever stranded me, with the exception of needing to jump a battery.
(b) Piersburg water pump - $336, Thermostat - $56, Oil Filter Housing gaskets - $20, hardware - $16, coolant - $20, Shop supplies/paper towels = $ 468 - Thermostat/Pump prices found on Ebay and BavAuto.com did a price-match only asking what site I found the pricing on. (c) I did the work myself, 12-14 hours total running for parts/tools/etc. 6-8 hours of total wrenching, could do this now in 4 hours (d) Only additional damage was a gasket on the hose from the Thermostat to the Oil Filter housing. This sprung a leak and caused an additional day delay to get my car back. Luckily my wife stays home and I was able to use her car while I waited the week to order/receive parts. I also lost a clip for the coolant hose that clips at the bottom of the coolant reservoir. Believe it or not, you can't order this clip. I had to negotiate with the parts guy at the stealership and asked him to ask the techs if they have any clips laying around from a replacement. They did and they "assured" me that they were "their" property. I brought them a bag of Butter Burgers from Culvers and thanked them for helping me out. (e) never tracked the car (f) automatic transmission Last edited by ExchangeHut; 12-19-2012 at 12:19 AM.. Reason: Update |

Didn't know the N52KP has a heat exchanger, my N52 330i dosen't have one, I though only 335i's had them....
In such case if your changing your oil filter housing gasket, no brainer to do the heat exchanger gasket right on it. I'm at 120k miles on my pump/stat, I check my car monthly for any waterpump codes, as soon as I start getting some I'm doing mine. Did a coolant change when I did the oil filter housing gasket, COOLANT WAS FULL of rubber from the failed gasket. |

Does anyone know how many speeds the aux fan has? I ve heard mine going on at low speed but only when I drive car rough at high rpms. I think this is normal since I remember this happened to me a few times ove the years and did it yesterday. I could hear fan a low speed after I turn car off for about 5 min then fan shuts off. I will checl coolant level just in case.

My E91 2007 has 117K Miles. I've had low coolant warnings twice in the past year. First time I only had to fill less than a quart. the second time, seems like half a gallon. I looked down the engine bay and noticed that there's wet (likely coolant) spots at the bottom panel/tray. This is almost directly under the headlights towards the very bottom of the car. I suspect something is leaking. Could it be the water pump? Or just hoses/connections? I need to open the panel up and inspect. So, back to my question. Does the water pump begin to leak prior to failure? Or does it just stop working? NOTE: I have not yet had high temp warnings. I'm very nervous because my daily commute is ~ 45 miles (1.5 hrs) each way on LA freeways. Much thanks in advance! |
