did i fck up my manual trans?

was doing a fluid flush, and for some reason didnt check the instructions for which was the drain/fill plug.

instead, i drained the fluid and filled the transmission by undoing the highlighted bolt. does anyone know what this bolt actually does?

Did you fill it through the correct plug afterwards?

nope - filled up 2 quarts through that hole.

judging from this video, it seems like its all going to the bottom of the trans (where the correct oil fill plug would route oil too). but i am not certain.

Another concern is that the trans is overfilled atm.

If you have anymore transmission oil left, I would add more through the correct fill plug till it drains out of that. That way you will know that you have enough fluid in the transmission. Also, if the "random" screw really allowed you to fill the correct cavity, then the transmission should overflow quickly. If not, you know things are amiss.

PS: overfilling is not possible, since any excess fluid will come out the fill plug when you remove it.

Hahaha just make sure your floor is pretty level... I didn't realize my garage floor had a slight bend and filling quantities weren't really perfect.

turns out it was the mounting bolt for the 3rd/4th gear shift fork.

Just drained the side with the fill hole. All is good now!

You were lucky if you were able to put the bolt back in and nothing in transmission fell inside. Long years back some Miata 6 speeds had a bolt that looked a lot like fill plug bolts, and if removed some gears inside were falling from its location requiring the transmission to be opened up for repair.

I was thinking the same thing. The OP must have not moved the output flange or the shift lever with the mounting bolt out. He is lucky. SPF.

Note: he's not yet indicated if he's actually driven the vehicle...

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Drove the car 2 miles ish before draining the fluid with the correct fill bolt.

Got very lucky - still feels weird thinking if i move the shift fork, or had i been in 2nd gear, it may have gone very south in a home depot parking lot...

Are the plugs at the same level, and what's the yellow plug for? Ah mounting bolt...reminds me of when I did my Lexus rear brakes and forgot to release the parking brake, as I forced the rotor off, the parking brake shoes got ripped off hahahahahahahahahahahahahah I crack myself up. I wasn't 100% I could even put them back, without removing the hub due to a pin that needed to be inserted from the inside out (but I could)

Anyone ever see the procedure for a Toyota automatic "sealed" transmission? I know when dealing with ATF, it's a bit incredible how temp affects its volume, just more than one would imagine. I did my wife's GM SUV which has a dipstick, and it took multiple tries to get the level correct.

Give me a manual any day!
