Can a cracked breather hose cause a vaccum leak?

Trying to help my son,2007 335i.

Did his valve cover gasket last pm (well, Pm to2AM) and he drove home 50 miles. No problem.

Drove a few miles to work this AM but on the way to lunch it started running very rough and he shut it down, threw a code, not sure what it is yet.

In the valve cover process he cracked the breather hose from the valve cover and had no choice but to wrap it with tape.

Is it possible this has opened up as a vaccum leak or look elsewhere. Does sound like vaccum to me?

Thanks.

(Gonna have to go read the code I guess)

yes.
everything from the VC goes back to the manifold for the PCV system to be closed and not vent to atmosphere.

As said above... Yes a cracked breather hose equals a vacuum leak. I also think if you wrapped that cracked area of the hose with tape it might not be the source of trouble.

Like if it was tightly wound with duct tape although I wouldn’t call that a permanent fix (the hose should be replaced ASAP), but I also would think it would not be likely to be leaking again the very next day after being duct taped. If you used masking tape or scotch tape, well all bets are off lmao.

So although it definitely sounds like you are battling a vacuum leak maybe you have another area of leak besides the breather hose.

Thanks.

Cracked at the ribbed section, my son wrapped it rather sloppily in electrical tape. Until I can find the hose locally or get it shipped in I’m going to we-wrap it with silicon tape and see what happens.

Suspecting maybe one of the vaccum connections came loose after valvecover surgery but let my son do most of the work.

We’ll see what happens next.

I had the same hose crack when I replaced my valve cover gasket and I wrapped it back up with self-sealing silicone tape. I haven't had any issues so far.

I did it as a temporary repair until I find the time to remove my intake manifold and replace that hose along with all the other PCV/oil separator plumbing.

That will be my next strategy since none of the Parts stores (dealer even) carry the hose.

I went to look at the car tonight and there were no codes indicating any running issues, only one brake light failure. Odd. He said the CEL came on.

Started a bit roughly but ran and drove fine. Odd.

I’ll do the hose repair soon.

So I cracked the same hose on the N52. I cleaned it real good with brake cleaner, then denatured alcohol. Then I used a 1/2" copper pipe butt joint fitting (it fits perfectly inside the hose), and JB Welded it it together. Use JB Weld between the OD of the copper fitting and the ID of the hose, and on the outside of the hose. My fix has now 50,000 miles on it.

Electrical tape reinforced with zip ties is good temporary fix as well.
