[E90] disable side marker but keep blinker
Well I'm not sure if I can explain this correctly but I'll try.
In my E90 the orange part in the headlights has two functionalities. 1 - work as a blinker 2 - work as a side marker (the orange part goes on if you turn your lights on) Now I found this picture (I hope the owner doesn't mind I borrow it ) Read my question below this picture Pins 1 and 12 both are for the side marker/blinker. Does this mean that if I remove one of the pins I loose either the blinker functionality or the side marker functionality? I think the lights would look muuuuch better at night without the orange parts illuminated (except when using the blinker = safety!). I hope I'm clear enough Thanks! |

thought of doing too. didn't know where to start though. has anyone tried this before? cause that yellow marker is sometimes annoying and makes the car look weird especially with black exterior.

Pins 1 and 12 are NOT for the same function. 1 controls the Angel Eyes, 12 controls the blinker bulb. Whether it blinks or is constant is a function of Footwell module.
I've tried many wiring modifications to try and get JUST angel eye operation. None have worked so far. I beleive the only way to accomplish the deactivation of the yellow bulbs as a side marker, but leave them as a turn signal, is to program the car to beleive it is not a US model car. Unfortunately, this is not something BMW will allow, or assist you in doing. So it's hacking. And probably voids your complete vehicle electrical warranty. But I'm still working on it. Give me time. What I noticed is that somehow the settings of the car can be changed to EUROPEAN. If this is the case you will get the ability to turn on the angel eyes only! (have seen this on a EUR-car that had Halogen headlights) but I haven't talked to my service guy yet.

that's my plan, is to convince my footwell module that I have a Euro-spec car. This is not as easy as it sounds, and I doubt ANY DEALER IN THE NATION will be willing to do this mod for people, as it's probably illegal, and definitely against BMW standards....

I haven't looked at this, but couldn't you simply invert the functionality of the side marker/blinker? I.e. so it turns on the light when the car tries to turn it off. That way it would normally be turned off, but still blink when asked to. Perhaps use pin 12 to control a relay or transistor? Just an idea, don't know if it's doable.
I guess you'd get a "bulb broken" warning though. Possibly worked around by adding a minor current draw when the light is off. |

doesn't work, unfortunately.
BMW light signals will not properly power a relay, because they are pulsed signals. plug a relay control side into a pulsed signal, and listen to the relay buzzzzzzz as the contacts open and clase over and over again. |

Feed the pulsed signal to a capacitor, to smooth it out?
If all else fails, digital logic should be able to solve it. A PIC or some such running a simple timer loop that holds the output pin low as long as the input pin pulses come within X milliseconds. |

The cold monitoring during the pre-drive check sends pulses during the first 4 seconds. This explains why side markers, when replaced with LEDs light up like strobe lights initially.
