Glad you found the issue. Mine has many little cracks too. Also, a tiny piece is missing on the drivers top corner.

It does not help the fact that one of our cats used to sleep on top of my car (right by the sunroof) inside the garage and this cat would slide down the windshield and stretch his claws on the rubber piece!

I doubt if anyone will see this, being as is two years late and a solution has been found. I just had this exact same problem on my 06' e90. The sound that this issue created was very, very , very LOUD. See, I said very three times and bolded loud. Furthermore, the piece that was hanging off of my windshield couldn't have been more than 2" long at maximum. I am still dumb founded that this was creating such a very, very, very LOUD noise. I guess so much so that I'm commenting on a 2 year old post. I just needed to be heard!

I don't even think there's anything to be learned through this experience. Seriously, other issues at least allow you to deepen your understanding of automobile mechanics. This is just ba meaningless nuisance.

G-d damn, that noise would drive me absolutely insane. It's kind of funny in retrospect to think that a small piece of rubber going ape-shit on the roof would cause such an excruciating sound to the ear.

I'm glad both the OP and the most recent poster found the issue though and that it's a relatively easy fix.

Thanks to you

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. I just had to thanks the OP for the video and post. My wife called frantically on her way home from work disturbed by a loud noise coming from the car. 2006 325i E90. I convinced her to just drive it home. Luckily her friend recorded the sound on her cell phone. I found this thread and viola! Sounded exactly like the video. I went to the car and sure enough there was a broken piece of trim and black marks from where it was slapping the roof. Thanks again and again!

Solution: rip it off.

And now... Silence. Ahhhhhhhhhh.

Though do I need to replace that lining now?
Had this problem. I knew my lining was going bad, but i didnt know the sound was it.

Just had this exact same problem on my 08 m3. It was driving me crazy trying to figure out what it was. I didn't even have anything hanging off it was just cracked. I removed the part that was the most cracked and it solved it.

Thank you OP for updating with your solution.

i stumbled on this thread looking for a similar problem, can't wait to get back to my car later today to see if that's what's going on. it happened to me not long after going thru a car wash, so maybe that loosened up the piece (?) i'm hoping this is my problem!
