Chevrolet SS's (not Camaro, Holden sedan) are on sale 20% off right now. ($40k)
Went and looked at one. They offered me $5.5k for my '10 335d with 103k miles on it.

SS should be a great car and the manual will likely hold a good portion of it's value for a long time...
But for 1/20th of the price, I could get deletes and tunes that would make my d eat the Holden for breakfast (maybe?) and reduce my ongoing maintenance costs to maybe only 3 or 4x that of the Holden.

Anybody got a comparison between 2017 SS and 2+ 335d?

JW

The only benefit of getting a SS over the tuned D is for the sound of a V8 and added tech with a newer car and warranty. I contemplated getting a SS for a while but it's more cost effective to keep my car.

I've ran the earlier 14 SS with school buses of success, ; not even a factor.

The new 1LT seems much nicer, extra 50hp or so. But is selling your d for 5.5k really gonna get you anywhere? Not exactly a good comparison plus your insurance will be much higher.

No way I'd trade it for $5.5k. Even if tax is 10% all I'd have to do is sell it at a private sale for more than $6k to be better off than trading.

Definitely was not serious about making a sale. Won't darken that dealer's door again. Had it explained to me that they researched recent auction results and they offer what they could expect to get at auction.

Well, little did they expect; but they aren't the only ones who have access to recent auction results.

They also offered $8k off MSRP. Chevy's website clearly says $10k off.
I suppose they planned on trousering the $2k factory rebate for themselves.

Thankfully-I'll not have to decide on another daily beside the D for 5-6 years in the future

Due to the increasing diesel hate in the UK, next car probably Alpina B3 or F80 M3.

Between my wife and I our gross household income is very respectable, plus we don't have any student loan debt. The only debt is our mortgage and the small amount remaining on an existing auto to be completed this year. But even with that stable financial situation, the thought of incurring a ~$600mo car payment just doesn't fit in the monthly budget.

I just don't understand how the Jones do it. I scratched my head walking around the Auto show wondering how people do it, most have $$$ day care cost, student loans, mortgage, two car payments, etc.
Debt. They take on too much debt.

I'd rather have more assets than liabilities, so I drive a cheap car and put more money into assets (housing and other).

My next car will be: as far away in the future as I can possibly stand it--when the 335d is a total hoopty POS.

Damn, those auction results are pathetic. I think I just want to buy older cars. Maybe keep the e30 and get a grand national or an e46 m3. Or just keep the d forever. Cheap taxes and registration and a car that will never loose value either. Buying a car every 4 years paying 3k in taxes and interest plus high registration fees on something that is losing value like crazy is kinda ridiculous.

I don't ever plan on parting with mine. Nor do I think we'll ever get a better enthusiast diesel sports car from anyone. I purposefully sought out a car with all the sport options and no IDrive/luxury options as I wanted a drivers car, not a tech lab on wheels. Once I'm "finished" with my car, it will be a 6mt, 500-550whp/650+wtq, family car that gets 40+mpg at 70mph. No other platform can touch those figures.

I'll take a Mazda RX- anything at this point. As great as the 335d is, I really do miss having a light, excellent handling vehicle with 'just enough' power to have fun.

A miata fits the bill but I hate convertibles. Also not interested in the RF or the FRS/BRZ.

Except for a Model S, which is astronomically more expensive.

And doesn't use fuel at all, which is an unfair comparison. The Tesla gets a 315 mile range on a charge and takes just over an hour to charge fully(at top charging speed). Meanwhile we can get 640 miles on a tank at 40 mpg, which would take 10 minutes absolute maximum(still way overestimated) to fill up. There isn't a fair comparison between the 2.

^ Exactly. I drive cross country at least once, if not twice, per year. I've already put 38kmi on my car in less than 2 years and it sat all last winter. I can't wait an hour every 315 miles on a trip to cali and back. It's a long enough drive as is LOL.

Not to mention 315 is the ideal number, if you have to use your heat, a/c, headlights, or blinkers then the numbers drop. When the P85 was estimated at somewhere around 250 miles, those I knew with the p85 said at 200 miles you better be within eyesight of a charger

I do love this car, but it is at least 500 pounds heavier than necessary. Can't think of a fun enough replacement.
