Thought of a way to turn on JUST the Angel Eyes on E90

Hey guys...

So I was looking at an E92, which uses the halo's for Daytime Running Lights, and I thought... why can't us E90'ers?

I'm going to monkey around with the wiring in my 330i, and try to make the daytime running lights operate my halo's instead. I think I can do it, without much trouble, I AM, however, going to lose the "flash to pass" funciton of the high beams. I will still have my Xenon highs, so I'm not worried.

Just a note... this is going to be two different procedures, depending on whether or not you have Xenon or Halogen. Halogen users will either COMPLETELY LOSE high beam functions, OR you will have regular DRL's on AND angel eyes on. =(

no sir.

As I've been reminded, Halogens have no angel eyes, so they don't apply.

But on Xenons, you have two set's of "high" beams. You have the non-xenon component, which is only used for daytime running lights and "flash to pass".

You have also a shutter in the Xenon projector that will turn the Xenon low beam into a high beam.

I'm going to remove functionality from the non-xenon bulb. it will be inop, no DRL, and no flash to pass. You WILL still have Xenon high beams.

I will be applying the power from the N-X high (NON-XENON high) to the angel eyes, so they will be on with DRL function, and will also flash with "flash to pass" =)

That's just a plus, I guess.

that't what I plan to do, except I won't be just switching. my first experiment will be to splice the wire for the DRL light into the wire for the angel eyes. This way, the angel eyes will work when DRL's are on, AND when lights are on.

And in this case it doesn't matter if they are the same wattage bulb. The bulb is what decides how much power will flow through the wire. If i put the headlight wire onto an angel eye, I'm not going to damage or harm a single thing.

On the OTHER hand, if I were to put the angel eye wire onto a headlight, the headlight's increased consumption would likely burn the smaller fuse/wire for the angel eye wire.

Hey guys, my car is in the body shop indefinitely (3 days-2weeks?)

for some paint, on BMW's dime.

Anyone in SoCal want to volunteer to be my guinea pig for this mod? it won't damage your car in anyway, I can promise that.

i'd be carefull about doing this. your runnng the risk of blowing the bulb, and your probalby going to get some sort of error message no matter how you do it.

One thing to try potentially - switch the wires for the DRL and the angel eyes. However i do think they are different voltages, so i highly doubt that will work.

I'd say just dont do it or run a completely new wire to the angel eyes and get a seperate bulb. Leave the original plugged in just hide it somewhere. This way you can leave all the electrical the same, just add an extra bulb to always run the angel eyes.

I'm not going to screw around with something like this though

I don't follow your fears in this, MDS.

In an electrical circuit, the loads (in this case, bulbs) determine the amount of energy flowing through the circuit, and the source determines the voltage. I do not beleive that switching the wires will damage anything, because I am not drawing excessive current through the circuit, I'm only redirecting voltage. now, if the voltage supplied to the DRL's is different than that supplied to the halo, then I will have a concern, but I do NOT beleive they are different voltages. I believe they are BOTH 12v signals, pulse width modulated to achieve desired brightness.

ok I just got an idea maybe it works what if you add a new wire to the angel lights? and connect it to something that turn on went the car turn on like the int outlets ? can that be done?

you will not loose any funtion like the flashers

that is indeed another option. I'd have to put it on a switch/relay set up though, because I don't want a light to ALWAYS be on when the car's on. Unfortunately, this would also require a lot more wiring.

I hope to have my car back tomorrow, and I'll get started on this project Thursday.

just dont forget, that when the car is turned on that all the bulbs are checked to make sure the are working correctly. just be carefull your not going to set off any error messages or warning lights.

Good Luck though!

Don't worry guys, I'll get it right! lol. I want just as bad as everyone else to have angel eyes with no turn signals.

A high effort, but really trick way to do it would be to get a new light switch (euro fog version) and put in your own relay system. Then wire the relay to trigger off the rear fog switch button instead of rear fogs. That way you can manually control when the Angel eyes turn on and off and it looks and feels OE from the driver standpoint. And if you splice it in line with the current wiring you would not have any error codes as that circuit would still be intact. I did something similar on my E30 M3 with the Euro city lights. the hardest part was hiding all the new wires. It was simple to set up. Last step would be to deactivate the DRL so that they are off and only angel eyes are on during the day, but you can still “flash to pass” because that circuit is intact.
