Knock on wood - but after taking apart the rear brakes several times (including sanding down the rotors and pads), nothing worked. I believe my cause was the result of a lip on the rotor and as the brake pad expanded with heat it would rub up against the lip... I changed the rotors and pads and the noise has gone away completely (and hopefully does not return... its been about 4 months now).

I've got the 10mph squeek at the back and as my pads are low i ordered some ATE rear pads. I haven't installed them yet, but was surprised to see a rubberised 'pad' stuck to the back. Presumably this is an anti-squeal device, which means i don't need to add anti-squeal paste too. I wonder if the pad design has changed due to the amount of complaints ?

Quick update -
The original pads DO have a rubberised anti-squeal pad stuck to them, so i used some copper-slip on top in the hope of stopping squeak coming back at a later date. No squeaks so far though which is great. The pad swap was very simple, took 20 mins per side - pleased my 1st ever BMW DIY went so well

I used ATE pads from mister-auto (£41.48 delivered). Out of interest the original BMW pads are stamped "BMW Textar T4191 FF", with ATE printed on them, i guess the calipers are made by ATE, and hence the Textar pads are ATE approved:

It's not the pads that cause the 10MPH squeak.
As the pads and rotor wear a lip is created on the rotor. That lip is the source of the noise.

Typically its the sensor that rubs and squeaks....the sensor has a tiny nub on the end that will rub on the rotor long before the sensor itself is tripped. That's what it ended up being in my case. I replaced the pads and sensors about 10k miles back and still no squeak on accel. since then.

May have been in your case.
The typical case is the lip on the rotor rubs the edge of the pad, which is why some slight pressure on the pedal stops the squeak.

My car had newer pads with no chance of the sensor being anywhere near the limit and they still made the noise. For thousands of miles, they made the noise.

You know, I did replace the rotors as the same time...guess it could have very well been the rotors.

My car is squeel-less so I'll chime in.

1. Removed both brake sensors (RR and FL) and zip tied. I change them frequently with my track pads (PFC08) so always checking pad wear.
2. Added antisqueel to all brakes. I also put some on the prongs in case that caused a small squeel.
3. I pushed back on all the dust covers to give more clearance. If you look at the OP's pics you can see the piece that has rust is connected to the dust cover. If you push on the dust cover enough you're also giving room for where it might touch the rotor. This actually ultimately solved my RR squeel.

Car has been squeel-less for about 15k miles now.

Just had my brakes done and my guy says the issue is the edge of the pads and he chamfered the new ones. Also no sound for now, we'll see I guess.

Based on my experience...

If you get the squeak without pressing brake pedal, most likely are your rotor and pad lips or sliding pins not sliding well to open and close the caliper due to brake dust accomulated or lack of greese.

If you get the squeak when pressing the brake pedal most likely is due to worn out pads/sensors touching rotors.

I'll share my story. Last month had my rear rotors and pads replaced. Squeaky squeaky after the brakes were completed, very annoying. Took the car back in and they replaced the pads with an aftermarket variety (the originals were OEM). No more squeak.

I'm not sure how or why, all I know is when I press the brake pedal I no longer have that annoying noise coming from the rear of the car.

just use crc brake silence paste on the back of your brake pads, squeal will be gone.
the BMW holds the pads closer to the rotor at speeds <20mph, which is why over 20mph the squeal is gone.

Your not suppose to grease the pins, only clean them with brake cleaner, the grease will cause the rubber bushing to swell and cause them to start sticking, they are designed to work dry.


I been having the squeaking on accel problem for years, recently a BMW Tech told me to check the rotor backing plate, if you hit this often when you remove your wheels it could be rubbing the back of the rotor.

I'm planning on pulling my rotor off (passenger side) and checking this today.

I have to disagree. Adding greese to the pins was recommended by a few mechanics on videos I watched.

Don't be so sure. I'm on original rotors at 80k and had a squeak from 20k. I bent the plate back almost 2 yrs ago in the rear and no squeak since.

I have the same problem with my brakes during low speed only under 20 mph. I hear the Squeak/Chirp/Cricket sound and once it goes passed 20 mph, then it stops. You mentioned that you bought after market brake pads and the noise went away. Did the noise come back or is it gone permanenetly? What brake pads did you buy? Thanks

I'm squeal free as well, now. Over this past summer the car started to develop the squeal when starting from a stop. I just replaced my rear pads with aftermarket (redstuff) and no more squeal.

I had about 6mm of pad left and the wear sensor wasn't touching, i even reused it. I have about 39k miles on the car, and there was almost twice as much meat left on the front pads.
There wasn't much of any lip on the rotors and they were reused.

I did note that the new pads had quite a chamfer on the leading and trailing edges where the worn factory ones had a right corner on the edges.

I agree with you. The pins move and is in contact with things that don't move. Why would you not lubricate where it makes contact. I don't think you can use just any grease though. Going to use either plasti-lube which is actually an OEM lube

I think either one is inert to fluids and rubber, check for yourself. Actually helps rubbers and plastics not degrade and provides lubrication for movement. Actually planning on going through and cleaning off every rubber part and rubbing on Dow Corning 111 as well.
