USB Music Downloads

Guys, can I use my ipod to play music from the USB in the glovebox, and also transfer music from my ipod to the harddrive?

In my previous 330i I had a usb under the armrest which worked my ipod with no problems.

Cheers chaps.

On the Professional system with hard drive you can upload music to the hard drive from the USB in the glovebox but if you want to stream music from an iPod you have to use the armrest USB

As said, the glove box USB is only for uploading to the Hard Disc in the car. You need a USB in the arm rest to play music through.

You can also use the USB in the glove box to charge your phone.

I have a cable that goes from there to around where the ash tray is.

Does seem silly that you can't play music straight from the glove box though. I wonder if it was deliberate so BMW could charge extra for the arm rest one?

Can already charge the phone through the adaptor/cradle inside the armrest (bluetooth).

Come to think of it, I wonder what year bmw introduced bluetooth music playback 'through' the phone adaptor.

Is that the armrest USB with AUX input?

It was the COMBOX that added the Bluetooth music playback. Check you don't have the option for Bluetooth audio by pressing the option button when in the Bluetooth area of idrive. I'm looking at upgrading to a COMBOX in my 2009 LCi to get this and streaming!

Sound quality is excellent through Bluetooth with the combox, well, as excellent as the boggo LCI can manage anyway, & certainly on a par with the AUX input. I still fancy putting an iPod nano in the ashtray though with extension cable to the AUX. Discreet but convenient.

Thanks, just checked, and no Bluetooth Audio. It must have been introduced after 2010.

Have you had a quote from the stealer for upgrading to a COMBOX?

It tells you not to use this USB as a charging point.

It was still an option and available in 2010, so you could still get the Telematics box rather than combox, just depends on what options you ticked when ordering i believe.

Nope havent had a dealer quote as i doubt they would do it. The COMBOX sells 2nd hand for about £175-£290 i have seen, but requires some retrofitting on the telematics wiring harness. Then its a bit of coding to get it working.

Come to think of it, I haven't got any telematics manuals for my new car as I had for my previous car.

Telematics is the unit that you will find under the boot floor. It uses an internal modem along with its own IMEI number to provide access to BMW Connect and Assist services. If you have this you'll see BMW Online on the home screen of the I-drive. Telematics incorporates Bluetooth. COMBOX becomes Bluetooth, mobile internet tethering which from what i can see is a healthy bonus!

Aah then I do have Telematics!

So with Telematics what would I then also need to get or do to have Bluetooth Audio working.

The one thing I do know I will need is the special oem iphone adaptor which fits under the armrest. The adaptor I'm using at the moment only charges the phone and also picks up a stronger signal from the sharkfin.

Cheers for your help.

Is it possible to transfer albums downloaded on your phone to the hard drive in the car (via the glove box usb plug)? Or do you need to transfer them to a USB stick first?
Finally, how do you do either of the above methods?

it is possible only if phone provide it's usb storage as a usb stick with simple folder structure
iphone cannot do it and android phones can do that but with plenty of hacking(otherwise android provide all flash and cic will try copy everything or have long time to search for music files)
so it is simpler to copy files from phone to usb stick without folders or with one-level folders and then insert it in glovebox usb

I see. Thanks for that.
Just been watching some videos on how to pull music from a usb stick, and am I right in saying that all music will be put in to one album on the hard drive. For example - if I had two albums on my usb stick, would they be put in to one on the hard drive or would they still show up separately?
Or is it a case of putting one album on the usb stick, load it on to the hard drive, then delete it from the usb stick and put the second album on and then load that on to the hard drive.
Hope that all makes sense!
