please help..rattle suddenly started in right doors/pillar
hi all, my 2009 E90 335i has been rather rattle-free all these years until today.
Suddenly it's developed a rattle in or around the right side doors that happens when accelerating or braking especially, but also on bumpy roads. The only thing that has changed recently was I had someone install gloss black vinyl on the existing chrome trim around the windows and rain channel. But they shouldn't have had to open door trims, etc. The door closers seem to be normal and tightened. Could it be the door rubbers rubbing against the new vinyl? But would that be a squeak rather than rattles? please advise, before I pull the door and b-pillar trims off.. thank you

E90s with the black trim (OEM) are notorious for developing rattles/creaks from where the door seal (rubber flap with the felt on the inside) butts up against the black trim. It doesn't seem to be an issue with the OEM chrome trim.
Mine was quiet for 5 years then 2 months ago started making all kind of noise. The common solution is to put 3M squeak resistant tape on the black trim. It's an easy DIY and if you buy the clear version it's barely noticeable and only visible when you open the doors. Two weeks installed for me and so far so good. |

Does the noise caused by the rubber seals against the black chrome sound like a rubbery/squeaky noise, or is it a more solid noise?
I'm getting the more solid noise, almost like the door itself is shifting slightly and banging against the bodywork (though not that loud). The door doesn't seem to be hitting the closer mechanism. Is it okay to apply more gummi pflege to the upper door seals (with the felt)?

Gummi Pflege didn't work for me and truthfully made the sound worse. I'm not sure how to differentiate the noise the way you describe but mine was definitely lower pitch and not like a squeak, though that's how I've heard it described by others with seemingly the same problem. I do agree that it seemed like the door was shifting as a result of the body flexing while going over bumps.

Hi Tepro5, I'll try to get something like you suggested, but if that doesn't work, I might need to open up the door trim and see if anything's come loose. Bit of a coincidence though. I called up the vinyl trim installer but he confirmed he didn't drop anything down the door (after all they didn't remove any door trims)
I hope it's just the rubbing against the new vinyl wrap. Perhaps like this thread suggests about the door seals needing Gummi Pflege else they make a rattling noise: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11810 It's kinda strange, if I know what the problem is and can't fix it, that's okay. It's only when I don't know the cause that I really get annoyed...
