Upgraded to 19” wheels

Hello,

I just wanted to give a review of what happened when I upgraded my wheels from from 17” to 19”. I drive a pre lci e92 328xi and it had the OEM 225/45/17 square set up from factory.

I picked up a pair of used rims and tires 19x8.5 235/35/19 and 19x10 255/30/19 and the car feels a lot different.

Pros: the car looks a lot nicer and fills in the wheel well quite nicely. Handling wise, the improvements are negligible.

cons: car feels much heavier. Not sure if it of the increased rotational mass, but the car feels much more heavier and the engine seems to have to work harder.

The steering feel is also heavier and feels slower to turn. I am a lot more cautious of driving it because of the added weight and the slimmer tires

The front seems like I am sitting higher up, the rolling diameter is still the same so I am not sure why it’s affected. However i do plan on lowering it soon and see if it’ll feel like the original height again.

Comfort wise the car lost in this department. The suspension doesn’t feel the same. It doesn’t seem to absorb as much as it did before and doesn’t dampen as much as the 17”. I feel much more of the road and I’d say that it loss the sense of luxury in the car.

I consider the 328 more on the luxury side and the 335 more on the sportier side. If you’re looking for the sportier feel I would say 19” would be fine for the 335 but for the 328 which is more balanced between luxury and sportiness I would say 18” might be better.

I have KW v1 to lower the front of the car and I’d probaly keep the height of the back right now. The coil overs will probably make the car handle stiffer but I don’t mind too too much. As long as the it does increase handling and make the car turn nicer and feel lighter.

Did anyone else have a similar experience ? Let me know

I think putting 19” wheels on a 328 is a mistake. Forget about the esthetics, you are experiencing the negative performance effects. Look up “unsprung weight” and see that it won’t get any better. I went from 17” to 18” on my E46 convertible and had no ill effects.

I went from 18” m sport wheels(193) to 19s 9-10” on 235-275s on 328. And yes it was like putting on anchors. Mostly noticeable acceleration at slower speeds. I’m starting a fund for moving over to f14s to hopefully shave some weight.

Emailed a Vossen rep and asked how much my wheels weigh. The difference between the new vs oem are 3-4 lbs. Why does the car feel so much heavier? Ive watched some videos on wheel weight and it indicated that I shouldn’t feel much of a difference.

Its because they are vossen and heavy as fuck. Cheap rims are heavy generally or they will bend/crack easily. Their are quality wheels that will weigh less, but you have to pay to play.

How much do they weigh? With the tires? Weigh you old set up and new. Its probably more than 3lbs the rep is claiming.

Everything you are talking about is what happens when you add heavier & larger rims to a car.

No offense to you OP but vossens are for show 1st not performance. So you literally get what you pay for.

Can you post pics of the car with the rims?

How much do they weigh according to vossen vs. In real life?

I have a 2008 328xi and I have been running a staggered setup for the last 7 years. It is linea corse dyna 235/35/19 front 265/30/19 rear. Hankook Ventus v12 evo2 wheels. I do notice heavier steering and a little stiffer ride but not uncomfortable to me. My ride is all factory and has non sport seats. My educated guess take it for what you want is that running wider rear wheels and softer tires make it steer harder. Also would like to add never had any transfer case issues and I have 143,000 miles on the car and staggered set up has been on for the last 101,000 miles. In my opinion the car grips way better with the staggered setup and you can really dive it into a corner faster and harder.
