AWD vs. RWD vs. FWD

Found this really cool video comparing RWD with 4WD Quatto and FWD. It's a bit old (features the E46) but I suppose it is still a good comparison.

Each type has its advantages and disadvantages. The only real advantage FWD has is in the area of fuel economy, but as far as handling dynamics are concerned... overall FWD just does not work well especially in heavier cars. The new Civic SI's are pretty well balanced even at the limit, but that is a lighter vehicle and doesn't have much torque hence no massive torque steer.

RWD in most cases is the most fun to drive and feels naturally balanced. BMW's in particular have a great feel to them and I think that is one reason people buy them besides the high P value. RWD is just as much about steering with your feet as with your hands.

AWD depending on what you are driving can be just as much fun as RWD, you just have to drive it differently. The Audi's in general were targeting more understeer, but if you take something like an EVO on the other hand... those cars are a blast to drive. An EVO will understeer at the limit, but you can still get some good lift throttle oversteer or oversteer through trail braking... so you can get the nose to point where you want with oversteer .... then mash the accelerator to sort everything out and blast you out the corner. I am sure all of this can be done in a RWD car, but AWD just adds that little safety net in there.

Still my next car will be a RWD car With DSC its safe to drive around town every day, but when you want to have some fun, you can still turn it off (Why I won't get an IS350). But then that is just my opinion, I could be wrong

FWD vs RWD doesn't have much to do with fuel economy
