Appreciate the DIY - just took them out and cleaned today.

To add: I bought this $3 tester leads from Harbor Freight to activate the vanos on and off several times in the solution (i used carb cleaner) and hopefully loosen any debris stuck in between.



I connected the three leads as shown, then repeatedly tapped the remaining black lead to the ground post to activate the solenoid a few times submerged in carb cleaner until the discharge from the solenoid seemed clear.

Then I used compressed air to blow everything out then reinstall - I've yet to take it out on a test drive.

New user here- Thank you so much for this DIY!

Noob question; I've searched all over the forums and google but haven't been able to find an answer to this:
Replacing the Vanos solenoids is just a plug and play job right? There's no need to recode for the new solenoids? I plan on installing OEM replacements, not cheap off-brand.

I ask this because there's a guide on YouTube where some dude replaces his solenoids and then claims to show the process to "reprogram" his ECU to work with the new solenoids. Problematically, he unknowingly pulls up a valvetronic limit position learn on ISTA/D in his search for Vanos, completes it, then says 'all done,' seemingly with no engine problems.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I just replaced mine. I had an exhaust vanos code so I erased the code, and reset the ecu.

On an N52 with 121k miles I had the intake VVT code (June 2018). I used Gates VVS177 as my replacements ($69USD on rockauto). Problem solved, has not reappeared in the last 20kmi. Yesterday I swapped the solenoids for peace of mind, but had a lot of difficulty getting them back installed.

I re-read the first portion of the thread and I want to reiterate an important part of the installation:
- When removing, twist a little counter-clockwise. 1/8th of a turn helps a lot to loosen them.
- Opposite applies for re-installing. Twist clockwise while pushing and they will pop right in.

I used a lot of force to try and get them in without twisting, but twisting was quick and easy. Don't think I did any damage to them but they shouldn't require a ton of force to insert in the first place. I will probably clean and replace them again in 20-30k miles.

My wife's car (320i N46) was leaking badly around the Vanos seals. So i replaced them, and decided to give the solenoids a clean whilst i had them out. I used a 5v psu to have them operate whilst spraying cleaner. MAF cleaner because it left no residu, like brake cleaner does.

Then, after reinstalling, INPA showed this error code everytime i started the car: 2A83 - Nockenwellensteuerung- Einlass.
Remembering the DME showed an error before, i dug up some old prints i took from INPA, and found a 2A87, so there was already something going on there. I had the solenoids out at the same time, so i probably switched them in the process of reinstalling. The inlet solenoid is the bottom one on an N46 engine, so i took that one out again, and cleaned it with brake cleaner this time which is a bit more agressive. After reinstalling the error disappeared. Hooray.

On my N54 335i I have had a stumble on warm start that hasn't thrown any codes at all, just to try it I pulled both vanos out and gave them a good working over with brake cleaner today.. Warm stumble gone and my throttle response seems to also be improved quite a bit. Best 10 minutes I have spent on the car in quite a while. BTW, car is sitting at 160k miles with original vanos.

First of all thanks to the OP for this thread. It really came in handy when my car threw a 2a82 code this week. I also had a Cylinder 3 misfire that came on pretty much at the same time.

Ordered a OEM Vanos Solenoid from amazon and had it here in 2 days. First thing I did was check the oil filter to make sure the cage was intact. It was, so the next step was replace the intake vanos. Did that and cleared the 2a82 code, went for a test drive and glad to say it didnt return.

Turned out the cylinder 3 misfire wasn't related and turned out to be a bad coil.

Knock on wood but car is running great with those 2 repairs done. I cleaned the solenoid that I pulled out of the car and will save it as a spare.

Great write up and good additional info from the other contributors! Cleaned the solenoids last Saturday for my car with 140k miles on the gauge and no error since.

vanos system causing limp mode

hi so i have a 2001 328ci bmw i have rough idle multiple miss fire codes 13 and 2nd dairy purge valve system is wrong direction i been looking at the vanos it seems to be pointing in right direction but the other day i was wot trying to pass a vehicle car went and triggered limp mode meaning the ! point with the red around it in the shifter indicator came on and it was fine as i was still driving started to get progressively worse so about two miles of drive time at 55 mph to my my home shut the car off about twenty min later go to get back in and drive the car again it barley moved only like a 2mph indicator on in the dash still cant get it to go any where i basically have no reverse now i do understand the miss fire has been replaced all new coil packs plugs etc but not the vanos system so my question before i do any thing else is that will it trigger when you give it wot if the vanos system is failing i have disconnected the battery and cleared the codes the exclamation point is gone now but i have not drove yet i wanted do ask before i do and the vanos and when resetting the system do i disconnect the battery and clear codes or is it possible to use the istat+ system has any one used this system before is it easy or relatively simple to use and where is best place to down load it as well i appreciate everyone's time thanks ahead of time

Both brand new VAICO Solenoids, yet the 02A87 code is persistent. Who knows about the exhaust camshaft bearing ledges going bad?
