Bought my 2007 335xi 3 months ago with 56k on the odo, started hearing a ticking noise and was promptly brought to this thread by the search.
So, yesterday I dropped her off at my local BMW dealer for them to do the battery cable recall and inspect the car for the rattle after revving. I know what it is based on the hordes of videos here, sounds exactly like many others. I just heard back from my SA and she says it'll be $4100 to fix and it is that the "waste gate seat" that is worn. I asked about the TSB and she said, yeaaah, we can't cover it because your car is modified...?!? wtf!! The only mods I know of are a borla exhaust and the car is lowered. I asked her to get me a list of the "modifications". Tell me, guys, what do I do next. FWIW, I do have a 4 year 40k extended warranty from the dealer that I purchased the car from. and, unfortunately, my 3 mo 3k warranty from them has expired so I can't go throw it back into their face. SA also said, with my extended warranty that she wouldn't come out and tell them that it is modified unless they asked... which, they probably will. Any advice from you guys? I know many of you have been in a similar battle. |

By the way, how did you figure out that it was the waste gate problem as I do have the rattle, but it seems more like the exhaust flap (cold starts only)? I guess the only way to find out for sure is to put the "flap fix" (unplug it and leave it stuck open) and the see if there is any more ticking? |

Their final evaluation was that the noise is the "Wastegate Seat" that is starting to fail... because the TSB says wastegate actuators, they can not pursue further... This is what the SA told me, and she did not sound to knowledgeable, there happened to be a tech out on the floor and she called him over. I spoke with him and asked him what the difference is between the wastegate seat and the actuators and how the exhaust would affect the warranty work. I could tell that he didn't want to be too specific and it actually sounded like he didn't know. I asked him if he has replaced any turbos under the TSB and he said yeah, probably a handfull or so, but in those cases the car threw the low boost codes. So I said, ok, i just need to throw some codes It seems like they won't do anything until failure and then they will look into it... In the mean time, I may hit up BMW NA and see what they say. In the end, it sounds like the exhaust will not be an issue. In the mean time, I have a brand spankin new JB4 that just got delivered to my house, I wonder if I should hold off on installing it. |

wastegate rattle
I have the wastegate rattle...my SA claimed to have never heard of this service bulletin - SA is so frustrating!
I have an appointment in a couple days so hopefully they will swap out my turbos or fix the waste gate (does anyone know how they are fixing the problem currently). My car is still stock so I should not have a problem with warranty covering it. |

this is what i dont get.. ive seen this post covered many times.. and seen others stating the same things.. im at 75k.. in cali.. and even when it had a rattle they just blew it off.. now my turbo is making noise.. and they still dont want to touch it.. even called BMW NA and asked them about it.. no luck..
one post i saw it said it only covered untill mar 08 build date.. and im june 08....but the original poster says he has an 09..... pls pls pls.. what is the trick to actually get this approved.. I just got in an accident last month.. minor front end damage.. that yielded $15k in damage....dont hit a tire on the freeway,, just saying.. and jam your intercooler into your radiator.. etc.. But now after all said and done,, brand new parts, i still have to limp the car around since after the wreck my turbos make a siren sound, and the insurance doesnt want to cover it cause it was a known issue beforehand on these cars.. |

In either case turbo is warrantied up to 82k miles, but only if it is specifically related to wastgate rattle problem (not 100% sure on this). I have an 09 335i E90 and saw this information when had my service history printed by the dealer. |

OT; but my turbos were replaced last month under CPO not for wastegate rattle but for the dreaded turbo siren, sure they rattled a little, but nowhere near as bad as other owners have experienced.

How bad does it have to rattle before throwing any codes? 07 e92 with 66k on the odo i just picked it up 3 weeks ago. It had a slight rattle but assuming the extended warranty still covered. Come to find out BMWNA appealed the lawsuit and warranty work is put on hold unless actual damage, failure or codes. Now my rattle is getting worse each day, but still no signs of codes. BMW said they did an ecu reflash after getting my car back from them the rattle was louder and low end performance was noticeably slower....The is so is so frustrating not to mention the dealership(Grxxnxxx in Orlando) i bought it from sold it to me with a broken strut that BMW found after bring it to them for the wastegate and i had the dealership reimburse it after a huge hassle with them but BMW then recomended a full inspection so I brought to a known BMW specialist in Tampa (Lutz Performance - awesome people) and to our suprise - my steering rack and pinion was completely crack in half. The SA was in shock and disbelief I could have killed my self and should have had it towed let alone not even drive from Orlando to St.Pete where i live (2.5 hr drive on I-4). Now the dealership I bought it from wont do any thing about this extremely dangerous safety issue.
Sorry I know that was off topic just venting - but any ways back to topic, what and how bad of codes have to be thrown to resolve this wastegate issue? Basically had the car for 3 weeks been in the shop for 2 - great first time buy experience for BMW Last edited by DerkN54; 05-21-2013 at 10:50 AM.. |

in Park, with slight throttle hit, like rev to 1500 let off, and if you hear a vigorous rattle it should be enough. That's all it took for my car. But it was just a WasteGate replacement, not full on turbo. The faulty wastegates is what causes the blown turbo. So its in BMWNA best interest to fix the wastegates before they get worse. any mods? CPO?

Not really unless you count the DCI i just put in about 3 hrs before bringing it to Lutz and held off on the JB4 i just purchased (glad i did - dont need them telling me that was the cause).
Yes in park well neutral (6spd mt) and when driving. Its horribly loud and embarrasing. Last edited by DerkN54; 05-17-2013 at 11:05 AM.. |

Not sure if this was posted earlier but this seem like a good video to test for turbo problems . I would probably skip to second half of the video where he disconnects the vacuum hose.

Just to add my 2c... took my CPO 2007 E93 to the dealer with exhaust rattle last summer and they ended up replacing the turbos without any prompting from me.
I still get rattle when I start the car, but I don't think it happens during revs/driving anymore, I haven't noticed anyway. Will double check today. |
