Escort GT1 G-Timer TESTED

OK, here were my times for 0-60:

First try: 6.0
Second: 5.9
Third: 6.1

All of these runs were performed in DS mode. The problem is, my G-timer must not be set correctly because I watched the thing count up the seconds and the exact instant I hit 60MPH I looked at the G-timer and it was at 5.48 for one of my runs. 5.56 for another, and I think 5.51 for the other. Why does the G-timer think I'm reach 60MPH about a half second after I really am?

I also tried out the G-meter feature and was able to get 0.95Gs counted on the G-timer. Pretty good I think considering the manual that comes with the G-timer rated anything between .90G and 1.00G a "High Performance" car with the examples of Corvette, Viper and Porsche 911 with the BMW M3 and Acura RSX in the "Sports Sedan" .80G to .90G range. I was trying for 1.00G but I knew it wasn't going to happen, at least without some serious slide/correction.

Well, it's a cool little gadget to screw around with and the thing didn't move a mm when it was mounted on the windshield, stayed perfectly still until I took it off, and yeah I'd say it's worth $50. If I get the thing working correctly and giving me accurate times it will be worth probably $100 to me. So when it works right, yeah, it's worth it.

Probably, because the speedo in the E90 reads high.

g timer and 60mph speed

I currently own three bmw's including an e90 330i. I also have several other vehicles. BMW's are notorious for having inaccurate speedo's. My e90 is off over three mph at 60 and 4mph at 75. That means I must go 63 to have a true 60mph and 79 to have a true 75mph. Use a gps to calibrate your speedo. I'll bet that the g timer is correct. Another thing is that your speedo tends to lag behind your actual speed. It does not respond as fast as you accelerate.

That must be it because there is no way accelerating by 3MPH to compensate for the speedo discrepancy would take 0.5 seconds. Much shorter to get a mere 3MPH.

Not necessarily true... Have you ever noticed the discrepancy between U.S. 0-60 times and Europe's 0-62 times? Often they are 0.2-0.4s. Of course that's not 0.5s. Maybe the 330i is faster than I think.

Sorry, but I don't see how 2MPH will even add 0.2 seconds. My 330i gets to 10MPH is 0.3 seconds from as stand still so when its rolling how could it take just 0.1 less to add 1/5 of that speed?

Hey bmwexec, I got a GT1 for Xmas at work. Actually, I got a picture of one that while we waited for mine to arrive. Anyway, it arrived today, and a few of us went out and tested in my e90 335i w/ step. Here's what I got:

0 - 60 = 5.6 secs (with 3 people in the car running up a slight incline, about 50 degrees outside)

Forward Gs = .65

Side Gs = .95 (while doing a u-turn on a divided hwy at about 40 mph)

Thought you'd be interested.

I also just bought the GT1 for my christmas. While my 330i is still repairing in garage after hit by a stupid lady, i tested it on my rented RAV4 166hp 2.4L model.

Do notice that the GT1's display is not moving when you start accelerating. This is due to the electronic lag of the timer. nothing wrong with it.

Also, with my GPS, i also found that the 330i is over reporting its speed for about 4-5km/h from 100km/h to 140km/h.

Do notice that 330i shift gear (in automatic) when it reach about 100km/h.

All these add up will show G-Timer is actually a trustworthy timer.
