SAC clutch and flywheel advice needed!

Hi there,

Just finished installing a new clutch and flywheel on my E90 320i (N43)

Done about 200mls and clutch has started to slip pretty badly. Really should have noticed this sooner but did roughly 150 of the miles on the motorway.

Just looking for advice as to what I could have done wrong.

I know that these have a SAC, and when removing the star lock on the pressure plate the clutch actually moved out of place, this meant I had to loosen the pressure plate again to get it re aligned.

At the time I looked this up and was told that this should not be an issue with the SAC pressure plate, and that it would not need to be reset. Would like to know how you guys feel about this information.

I've also taken the slave back out and noticed that I can move the clutch fork up and down (towards the floor and roof)

Wondering if this was potentially the cause or if it's normal.

Thinking I could have fitted the TOB wrong, or even had a broken clutch fork pivot ball.

Or do you think it could mean that I haven't bled the slave properly?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Hi,the clutch fork ball will have nothing to do with slippage because theres no pressure on the clutch. If the clutch is slipping it can be that the pressure plate is not sitting flush with your new flywheel. Those clutches work way better when you reset them before fit on the flywheel. If i were you i wont drive that car because you will wreck a new clutch.Bad news is you will have to pull that gearbox again and start fresh...It will not be a clutch fork or slave that will make it slip

Hi there, thank you for your reply, I really appreciate the insight.
So you reckon I need to take it all off, and somehow reset the self adjusting pressure plate? Or do you reckon it's just not fitted properly?
And also you don't think the throw out bearing could be in wrong orientation, as I didn't double check that stupidly before fitting it!
Thanks I'm advance again!

Yes start over, reset the clutch but dont take out the spider in the middle.See if you can find a short spline to centre your pressure plate. The LUK clutch comes with 2 different types. You could prob just modify yours that came with the sachs kit.Leave the spline in there, fit the pressure plate then remove the spider in the middle to release the clutch.Do yourself a favour and buy the brass clutch pivot ball and remove the plastic one(If it has one)

I'll certainly have to give this a go, I've seen a couple ways to try and reset the pressure plate, but none have involved putting the spider back in, are you by anychance aware of a way to do this without any specialist tools? Unfortunately for some reason my Luk kit didn't come with a alignment tool, so tried to makeshift one and obviously it didn't work lol! Thank you again!

Theres a few good videos on you tube for a home made Jig to reset a pressure plate pushing the 3 springs to the side and put the spider that locks the fingers. Its a pain to do a clutch i know......did my 335i one about 6 months ago
