E90 Dealership Trade-In Value
I know these beauties arent worth what they used to be, but what are some trade-in prices you received from your E90s?
Mines is a 2010 328i xdrive - 140k KMs = $6,799.00 |

You're gonna get screwed on a trade in with a car this old, especially in this market.
140k KM is not that much either. It's all psychological. People see that "100,000" number and think, wow that's a big number! But that's not even 90,000 miles in the US. Would you feel the same way if it was only 87,000 kms? Also, the used car market is hot. My X3 is now worth $5k *more* than what I paid for it a year ago. And that's *book* value. My 330i is basically flatlined at $7000 (what I paid for it 7 years ago). Unless you're getting close to what you can get selling PP, I'd list it on Kiji for $10k CAD and go buy myself something nice with the difference. On the other hand, living near the border and having friends/family in Canada - that's where I go to buy a "high miles" car on the cheap. Our X3 had 62,000miles, almost 100,000kms. It's in fantastic shape and "low miles" to me. Ironic, isn't it? also, why do all Canadian ads for cars still reference MPG? it makes no sense, lol. Dealerships are super slick, be careful. They always ask if you have a trade first for a reason, they do this so that they can hide gross in your trade. Say you wanna buy a vehicle:
New car price: $20,000 Then they ask if you have a trade before negotiation, you say yes. “Oh ok then we’ll give you $6799 for it” You then try to negotiate down the $20,000 “Sorry no negotiations” They way you do this properly if you must trade in is you drive the new vehicle first, when they ask if you have a trade you say no, then you go into the office and you negotiate the $20,000 down first. They’ll always take it down more if you say you don’t have a trade because there’s nowhere to hide gross. After this, THEN you tell them “oh, appraise my car I might trade it” and that’s when you get the real trade in value that isn’t inflated to hide a discount. Moral of the story is, sell that car privately, it’ll sell quick. But if you must trade in, do the process in the order above. People that didn’t made me a lot of money over the years when I used to sell cars. |

I would certainly put the effort into selling it privately, it's the only way to get the most out of it and prices are high during this pandemic. I'm confident that KBB private sale is at least $3K more than trading it in.

People will pay whatever they feel is fair. Throw it out on the open market and let it decide.
Trade-in is a convenience and pay the premium of not having to sell the car yourself. Some folks have no time nor feel comfortable doing it. |

No!!!!!!! Trade ins are a scam. Sell it privately. You will get more. Between cargurus, craigslist, and facebook marketplace you will find a buyer.
Then you should buy privately. I would only deal with a dealer for lease or brand new car. |

Also saved the fun and games of trying to sell a $40K high-performance car privately. Cheap cars I sell privately. But you have to have a car that dealer wants to buy to sell. In most cases, anything old and cheap is going straight to auction.

trade in is only worth it if your car is mechanically bad and you cant sell it privately because noone would buy it... and you are just not willing to put any more money on it
also , at least in canada , whatever they offer you for the car , you need to add 13% tax savings , so if they offered you 10 000 , they are actually offering you 11 300 $. but it sounds like your car can sell for more... due to condition , mileage , current market, etc etc |

It is all relative, I shot an '87 911 for Bring a Trailer over the summer and then the owner had me shoot his '72 Defender 90 that was restored from the frame up but he will be keeping this one. The 911 sold for $73K minus auction fees and he had $45K in it. The lesson is to have your car reasonably maintained and get it detailed so you can photograph and then list it for sale. Otherwise, you leave a lot of profit for the dealer to make plus the profit on the car you buy from them.

Seriously... In this market...
List it on AutoTrader for maybe $2k more than what you want for it. I can almost guarantee you that you'll be receiving calls from dealerships looking to buy your car for just about what you're asking. I had a buddy just sell his F-150 for $1k less than he bought it for 3 years ago, and he put 80k miles on it in those three years. No joke. Ask for the moon... You just may get a star! |
