Rust on rotors

I have unsightly rust on the rotors as you can see:

How do I fix that and how to prevent it from happening again?

It's metal that hasn't been coated.u can clean the rotor hub and remove all rust and than sand and spray down with any color paint.

I have the bmw oem rotors and have 0 rust on them at all, my brother has the same ones and he does. They most likely forgot to coat them and now has rust

You can't just paint the rotors with any off the shelf paint, you would need some high temperature stuff. VHT header paint comes to mind.

sand off the rust and use some caliper paint (can) to coat the rotor hat.

I bought this car used and it came that way.

The dealer said they changed the brakes.

May be the rotors are some cheap non-OEM parts and that's why they're rusting.

I don't really want to paint it with any sort of garish color like red or pink, I just want it to look like normal rust free metal.

It's uncoated iron, it will get surface rust. They're not necessarily cheap. If you you want, you can paint the the hat (they have black), or buy rotors which are painted or coated from the factory.

Uhh, who said you have to paint it some funky color? Just use black or silver.

You can use a rust converter like Rustmort and skip sanding and painting. It will turn rust black and prevent rust from starting. Just make sure the brake surface does NOT get any on it. It will give you a rather normal unpainted look.
