Make sure that the torque wrench has been calibrated. Yes, torque wrenches needs tune-ups also.

It was a miracle. it was not our time to die. I'm still shock everytime I think back of what happened. Definitely not a fun time.

88 ft-lbs, to be exact. I just heard my wrench click 40 times tonight with my two cars. Net result: Found two loose lug nuts on the Jeep!

DAMN Alfred, that is crazy. Sure looks like some overtorqued lugs...awesome that you were able to get it pulled over without too much of an incident.

88ft-lbs +/-10lbs on the E9x (and pretty much any BMW from like '95 on). Always good to tighten once, then come back after a drive and finish it off after you switch out wheels. After they heat up they can loosen slightly and may need a final click or two.

Holy crap! Just saw this right now. Really glad you and Ewelina are doing okay. Sorry to see the damaged car though. At least the wheel got caught in the wheel well instead of dislodging. What a fortunate turn of events to a very unfortunate circumstance.

Again, just glad you two are okay. Good luck in dealing with Discount Tire.

When I worked at discount, there were only 3 people allowed to work on the european makes that came in. 2 were managers and then myself because we all own euro cars. The problem is that most of the technicians they hire are either right out of high school, still in high school, or don't know their head from their ass period.

Glad you're ok and it isn't worse than it was.

Thank you. We all should be careful driving now. You never know what would happen to your cars.

What kind of outcome should I expect when dealing with Discount Tire about this issue?

The thing is that you've already put 2K miles it. They are going to say that if they did something wrong, it would have happens sooner.

That is if the lugnuts were loose. I think if they were too tight, they were stressed over time. I just can't justify how all the lugnuts broke at the same time (without any kind of indications that the wheel was loose).

Yeah, but it's weird that all your lug nuts would break at the same time.

Discount tire did this to our truck. All of a sudden our rear wheel passed us by while we were trailering our snowmobiles back from the mountain house. They used Metric nuts on a Chevy Truck.

I had the exact same thing that happened to you happen to me on my M3. Peerless tire crossthreaded my lug bolts into my hub and luckily I had a slight vibration/squirelyness and decided to take back roads to work so I could get on lift and figure out what was wrong. 100ft after onramp CLUNK, rear wheel is sitting way up in the wheel well and rotor is digging a groove in my rear wheel.

Luckily I had a spare rear hub and did not even deal with peerless tire. Unfortunately for you, you may have to go through the hassle of discount tire. It took them a few months but on our truck we got new brakes, axles, driveshaft, rear diff etc from all of the damage. Plus I get front of the line every time I go there now

Depends on how big of a dick head the manager is. Each GM is different but typically their policy on this sort of issue is if the customer proves without a doubt that Discount is at fault, they will warranty their work and replace everything free of charge.

I know this, because we had a Cayenne come back with a flat tire after we had just replaced all 4. Found the air sensor was not properly secured. That's when we ended up implementing that the managers and myself be the only ones to touch the euro cars. Too much at risk for a newbie to be fucking with a $75,000 vehicle.

If the lugs were loose, they would have fallen out, not sheared off...unless like 3 of them were lose and fell out and then the last 2 sheared or something since they couldn't take the weight.

And yes Alfred, you gained a couple man points by getting this to the side of the road safely.

Good to know this has happened to others I don't feel alone now.

I went to Discount Tire and the manager didn't even sound surprised

Yea, which is not the case in my situation. All lugnuts were completely broke.
Thanks for the man points

Update: I went back to Discount Tire today after work to talk to the manager again. He got the approval from his corporate office to replace all the damaged items on the car because of this incident. He will be ordering a new wheel and tire tomorrow

An adjuster from Discount Tire will also come by my house soon to take a look at the car and see if anything else was damaged. If so, they will also take care of the other damaged items!

In the meantime, they will provide me with Nitto 555's to mount on my stock wheels so the car will not be parked in the garage while waiting for the wheel to arrive (even though I told him it wasn't necessary).

I'm glad Discount Tire is not giving me a hard time about this issue!
