Can a deleted D be quiet?
Hey guys. I usually just lurk around. I had an 11 335D CPO car that I had a JBD box on and that’s it. Was fun but in the shop ALL the time for sensors/glow plugs so I sold it when the CPO was expiring
Anyways, the guy I sold it to did a delete and has had zero problems in the 2 years since. So... I’m looking to get back in the game, but it seems all the videos I watch the cars are decently loud. I’m not looking for a loud 600hp car... just something that isn’t going to be in the shop all the time that was as fast as my last one on a regular JBD tune. So... my question is... how do I go about that? I know I need catted downpipe to reduce the odor... but what about the sound? Thanks guys. |

Just use a muffler. Maybe like a walker quiet flow. I know that diesel trucks use them and they're quiet, I'm sure they have a configuration that would fit these cars.

I wouldn't call IAknown's loud at all. I think a better question might be "can a 335D sound badass and not be loud?". Too bad exhaust kits don't come with published decibel@load/rpm specs - like a dyno chart for sound.

Honestly completely straight piped isn't necessarily "loud" only at certain rpm. I think in low rpm where our turbos are acting like a compound turbo it's pretty quiet, but when the bypass valves start to open is where it gets really loud like a single turbo. So I'm sure iaknowns exhaust is probably the quietest exhaust available but when you get on it it still sounds good with out being to loud. If it's still too loud then add a muffler. Easy as that.

Yea, just want something that is decently quiet so I can roll up thethe house and not wake up the kid. Or drive and not have any interior noise much past the usual.

I wouldn't call it like stock. Stock is quiet no matter how hard you romp on it. Catted dp with mufflers will still yield a mild whistle and a good exhaust note at WOT, but indeed is relatively quiet compared to no cat in DP.

I had a 335d with all deletes and an AA rodriguez tune 2.8. Great stuff. I sold the car early last year and would never do the deletes again unless I lived in BFE. Just going through a drive thru was embarrassing. the smell was awful and I just didn't care for it the bumper was constantly covered in soot too. The power was great and so were the MPG's, sound wasn't too loud either.

A gutted DPF is more quiet than a catted downpipe. I tested both back to back about a week apart. Smell is better too. I don’t have room for mufflers or I’d run them too. Spare tire underneath was my choice instead 😎.
I did suffer a mild power loss compared to catless downpipe I started with. I’d have to log in some way to quantify this. Last edited by BB_cuda; 08-26-2019 at 09:50 PM.. |

I would not consider the 335d "loud" when straight piped, sounds just right to me. I love rolling down the window and listening to it in parking garages. The smell however is a different story, it really does reek. I was honestly amazed about how much more it smelled then my deleted TDI's, but it doesn't bother me enough to want pay for a catted downpipe or sacrifice any performance

Even with a DOC you will smell diesel exhaust fumes... Just not as bad as a downpipe without a DOC

Has anyone placed a resonator in the exhaust system after doing deletes? If so, does it make a meaningful difference? I have full deletes and would like the car to be quieter than it is now. It’s not bad inside the car but somewhat loud from outside. I'm considering a cat and possibly a resonator.

Yes, JR has a tune that keeps the DPF and deactivates the SCR system (which stays in place). Possibly others have that option as well. It's quite civilized. Sounds the same as stock really.

A resonator as it was explained to me by my exhaust shop helps to "tune" the exhaust note. NOT make it quieter. So my exhaust isn't as loud as a straight pipe but it sounds way more refined. But it's still loud hah... If you want to be quieter a muffler will do that.
