Fseries manual trans into an eseries?

I have a e92 n55 xdrive, tough to find a replacement manual trans since ny second gesr syncro is fried. I wss wondering if anyone knows if a fseries n55 manual awd trans would fit the same? PN are different. First screenshot is my trans, second is an F.

Thanks

This seems to happen often on e series 335's including mine, my reverse gear is gone so I am curious if this would work as well since n55 MT's are hard to come by. Did you happen to put your car in 2nd when parked?

Yea I do put it in 2nd when parked. Didnt think it would be a problem, never has been on any other car, but seems to be the only factor that could have worn out the gear.

Happened to mine as well twice now and someone else I know, both 2011s. I never leave it in gear either, its definitely a factory defect.

Have you just been replacing them with other oem ones? Im considering a rebuild of it since xi manual is looking tough to find for the n55 eseries. I wonder if a rebuild would be somewhat more reliable.

Well the second trans was replaced under warranty when the car was about 3 yrs old and after about 2 years or so it slowly started grinding again. From what I've heard these transmissions aren't rebuildable but I'm not sure how true that is. I'll either do a n54 6 speed swap or get a trans from bmw for 3800.

IIRC the later N55, M3, M4, M2, etc. all share the same trans. And yeah my buddies went out and he could not find the N55 trasn anywhere so he paid for a brand new one. Synchro issues are somewhat common, seems to be drive related though.

Doesn't seem like its drive related, as many people has their reverse go out (hard reverse shifts?).

Definitely not driver related, seems to be a issue on some cars .

I had a popular local ZF specialist tell me that, take it for what it is worth. I don't recall if first and reverse are the same on these trans or not. But typically bad synchros on a low mileage trans are a driver/abuse issue.

Your link is blocked, whats the word between bmw. And .com?

N55 fseries trans seem to be much more available, definitaly interested in whether or not theyre just plug and play compatible, despite the last 4 digits of the model being different.

Thanks, interesting read, the guy swapped a newer n55 trans into his n54. Makes me think the two n55 trans may be similar enough to swap out without any problems, i just dont want to gamble a whole fseries trans and the labour to swap em out only to find out it doesnt fit. Hmm

Yeah the N54 guys love to say the N54 trans is stronger but that is nonsense as the "N55" trans is in the M3/M4, etc. and those guys are not exploding transmissions.

Been doing a bit of reading on this subject. All of the synchro failures I've read tend to be low to mid mileage cars.

My buddies 2011 E92 was over 100k. Just happened from one day to the next. But he is not the original owner (bought at 90k I think) and he is tough on manual gear boxes.

I’m not an expert on the matter so I have to ask: has it been confirmed that those transmission are 100% identical? Some n55 engines have forged crank. Maybe something like that happening with the m3/4 transmission? Or 335is clutch. Holds more power but is interchangeable.

My second gear in my E92 is also cooked. I found these two on ebay and compared them and they look like they would bolt up on an older car. I know one of them is awd and the other isn't but I couln't find a regular rwd to compare it too. I am 90% sure that we could put an f series trans in the E series the only diffrence I spot besides the awd part is the sensor on top but the E series doesn't need it so just leave it unplugged.

I would say that they would be exchangeable, from looking at the ZF part number. However, I think the gear ratios will be different - one is a 'diesel' box, the other 'gas/petrol', as indicated by the D or B in the part numbers. My only concern is that the new box would bolt right up, but some of the electronic parts internally would be different - I'm not sure what the letters on the end of the part code really indicate.
