Fixing wastegate rattle doesn't not equal "I need new turbo". Search google....there is a fix to get rid of the rattle......and it's not replacing your turbos.

If you did replace the turbos for some reason....would you have a shop do it, or would you don't yourself?

You should be able to set up OEM type turbos for $1,500-ish..... probably add another $1,500+ to have a shop install them.

These aren't the cars you want to own if you can't turn your own wrenches.....they will drain you bank account in a hurry if you have to pay someone else to work on them.

I did my mother's 335i for $1,600 including alignment and R&R for rotted exhaust flange studs. Ordered the ECS Tuning OEM set.

no one should ever own a 335i if they cant work on it themselves as labor cost will kill you on this car

option one $1500-$2000
buy the oem turbos on ecstunning and install it yourself

option 2 $2500-$3500
have a good independent shop replace the turbos for you

option 3 $5000-$7000
Go to the bmw and have them rape you.

Went with a local indy bmw shop to replace my turbos when they blew(was not wastegate rattle) and it cost me $1600 for new oem turbos and $1200 for labor. They also installed my inlets while they were in there and had everything apart. If you replace them and plan to mod have inlets and downpipes installed while they're in there.

So both turbos "blew" at the same time huh. Sounds pretty unlikely.....

I like option 3

How ab rebuilding turbos? If my turbos end up blowing on Stage 2, can I safely rebuild the turbos and run Stage 2 again? Don’t wanna spend $1600 on new ones if I can rebuild them for $300

Even if only one popped. You're going to pay that labor to just replace one?

Send your stock ones or cores to turbo lab America. They will go through them and install wastegate rattle fix for $650 shipped.

I guess it depends on the miles on them. Replacing just the bad one might save you $700+.

I was mostly commenting on that because "my turbos are blown" seems like a catch all for any issue nowdays with these N54's.....makes you wonder if that's a shops default diagnosi when they don't want to do much troubleshooting.

It wasn't a shop that did the diagnosis I knew what happened they suffered oil starvation. Plus it was around 80k miles so why the hell would I bother replacing one pay for all that labor just to have the other one blow and have to repeat the process over? Do it once and get it over with and dont worry about it in the future. The money didn't bother me. I considered going hybrid but have seen too many people post (on fb n54 pages) about them blowing only a couple thousand miles later and having to pay for labor multiple times.

What do you mean they "suffered oil starvation"?

Had a bad turbo oil line. Basically the turbos had no oil during a pull

a lot of people still pay to maintain their N54's. nothing wrong with that especially if the shop does quality work and stands behind it.

Lot of benefits with taking your car to a reputable shop.

-save you a lot of time and headache, time is money.
-you have someone to blame if something goes wrong.

-list can go on.

At $100+ an hour that most good shops charge.......It's hard for me to justify ever having a shop work on my stuff. Plus, I trust my work more than I would trust any shop.

It depends what the job is. How much they charge for the job. If I have the tools ect...
I absolutely trust the shop i take my car to. Currently they have a Lamborghini huracan in there and when they did my clutch they had an Audi r8 v10. They also happen to be one of the best tuner shops around my area and have the best prices.
Most stuff I'll do myself but atleast until i get a shop I can work in I'm not gonna do extensive jobs on my back in my driveway. Others are more fortunate and have their own lift and a big shop/garage to work in.
