Oil temp question

Hello all ,

This will be my first post of the forums and it's a question regarding oil temps. I've searched countless times and read countless threads regarding the oil temps on our n54s, what I've concluded is that normal operating temp for our cars is around 240-250f , which is on the high side for turbo cars. I've looked into some upgrades , bigger intercoolers , external thermostats for the oil coolers etc, but most people claim that although the stock oil system (with oil cooler) is not extremely good it's good enough for daily driving . Thus leads me to my question . I have a 2008 335i with the oem oil cooler. Yesterday it was only 55f out and I was in stop and go traffic checked out my oil temp and it was already at 255f . My car is full bolt on and I was in map 2 of the JB4 in the traffic . My question is that temp to me is a little high , what are my options to get that down a bit ? That was in 55f weather I can only imagine it will be worse in 85-90f air .

I've herd about the AD-E thermostat is a easy install and most people like it but I'm not sure if this will be the solution for my car . I've also been trying to find a simple bolt on oil cooler but can't find one . Please let me know what you guys think ! Thanks in advance !

P.s. for all who run JB4 with a BEF , can you use map 0 with a BEF added on? The only reason why I was in map 2 in the traffic was because I didn't know if you could run map 0 with a BEF ?

think you can source the secondary oil cooler from a 335iS and retrofit that..

Might go with these seems pretty legit , although not many reviews on this brand other than their charge pipes for newer m models

I just bought the above ftp off eBay for $30. It dropped my oil temp. by 15 degrees but only when moving.
How long were you in traffic? Can u check you water temp. and see if that shoots up in temp. also.
also check to make sure your radiator fan is working correctly. Their was a post about the same thing and it was his fan.

I found it. Its a 5 page post here is the answer:
Update:

Turns out, while the tech guy at the Indy shop got the fan activated, he could only activate it at 90% power. 10, 20, 30 etc., etc., didn't fire up. Of course the fool didn't mention that. So, we sourced a new fan today, and bingo... oil temp issue is now officially fixed. I literally hammered it all the way home, and it didn't go over 115C.

Thanks everyone for your help on this.

Cheers

Dave

Hey thanks for the reply ! So as it turns out the next morning my car instantly gave a low oil indicator on the dash (found my valve cover was leaking not around the engine but inside spark plug sockets) so I topped it off and the temps has gone back down to normal under same driving conditions about 35-45 mins of stop and go traffic . But I'm still unhappy with the 240f temp oil , would you recommend the ftp thermostat ? Any down sides to it ? Thanks so much for the reply again!

yes I would recommend it. I am in southern Calif.but it takes a little longer to warm-up and get to 160deg. but i'm in a warmer area. It only takes 10min. change. So you could change it in the winter and reinstall in the summer. I figures for $30 I would give it a try.

Thank you I think ima try it especially for summer time coming up . Also going back to that thread you found , did you know if the oil temp was over heated only in traffic or even while driving ? My oil temp was at 255 again today in traffic 56f ambient temp but when I got off the highway went down to 245f with the air hitting the car . Also changing to 0w-40 Castrol edge oil , have not had a good time with the 5w-30 BMW oil lol. Thanks so much!

Your oil temp. seems high to me, but lets talk about your antifreeze. 1st is it full. 2nd what is its color and mixture. you can buy antifreeze test strips that tell you the % of water to antifreeze. I believe bmw antifreeze should be blue.
It sounds like you just bought the car so the maintenance is unknown.
What is the oil temp. when your on the freeway at 65-70mph? should be 240f or less.

My oil usually doesn't go higher than 230, unless it's over 85 degrees out. Then it might hit 240-45. Rush Hour traffic of course it spikes, but that's to be expected.

I don't have an oil cooler on my N54 either. I do use 5w-40 Amsoil European oil

I use Amsoil Coolant with their coolant Booster.

I'd be curious to see what your temps will be.

I'd never use 0w-40 in an n54 during the summer months. Especially a tuned one.

Personally, I'd change out the oil cooler to something that's better. Look into Mishimoto.

Thank you for your reply , as for coolant , I actually just did a coolant change / flush with brand new bmw coolant (blue) no less than 5 months ago , I also checked the coolant level last week once this all happened and I thought if need some but it was completely full ( checked on completely cool engine )

Edit : yes my oil temp is around 240-245f while on the highway doing around 70 mph

Get the thermostat and report back. The one above looks just like the AD Engineering one except color. It works fine, and you can move on to the next issue. At 105 Texas degrees, going 85 mph, I normally see 215 or 220 degrees. At a standstill same temp it is about 235. As mentioned above it takes a bit longer for the car to warm up. Take and give. Do it.

Quick update :

This morning about 54f outside, stop and go traffic for about 35-40 mins , coolant went up to 230f max but quickly went down after getting off the highway , oil went up to max 246f , don't get why this car is being so temperamental , but I think we can take out the coolant as the cause . Anyone know if there's a way I test the fan? Thanks!

Thanks for your reply , I think I'm going to go ahead and buy it and throw it in especially because I'm doing an oil change soon, do you need to buy the matching thermostat cover or the oem one should be okay? Thanks !

Edit : found it on amazon 🔹 FTP 🔹 Low Oil Temp Thermostat Cooler Valve Parts For BMW N55 N54 135i 335i 535i https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M6WUUFI..._RwXXCbSVC77KC

You don't need a cover. I reused mine, and no leaks.
Fyi- I use Mobil 1 0-40 euro. How much of a summer do you get in Boston?
Not to start a oil war. Their are many posts about oil.

My oil usually doesn't go higher than 230, unless it's over 85 degrees out. Then it might hit 240-45. Rush Hour traffic of course it spikes, but that's to be expected.

I don't have an oil cooler on my N54 either. I do use 5w-40 Amsoil European oil

I use Amsoil Coolant with their coolant Booster.
Do mishimoto make a bolt on oil cooler upgrade ?
Yes...

I've been trying to look for something like this and I couldn't find it lol! Thank you so much I really may look into doing this upgrade soon. Have you any experience with this oil cooler and it's preformance ?
