There was a time where AWD cars were the territory of Audi, but in the last few years, BMW's xDrive system has become really ubiquitous. BMW claims their system is one of the fastest and most efficient systems out there and have put together a slick video to educate you on it.

xDrive uses a variable torque split between the two axles which functions in 10ths of a second whenever wheel slip is detected.

Not new news but this marketing pitch is setting the tone for more X-Drive Ms in the line up. Better 'dynamics'...

Might work OK but looks shite with se springs and wheel arch gaps measured in feet not inches...

Hopefully thats resolved in the new g series metal.

You are correct and I have thought about that question a while, considering the 550 will be considerably faster than the current gen M5 (F10.) So you make a very good statement... Why wait?

I always thought of that idea. But people always goes back to weight of the mechanics to do so. Also, if you would do such a thing would it devalue the RWD only cars?

I'm up for it given the so called set backs in weight.

It's like you have a 2 for one in a car.

Not for the models (or outside of BMW like in Audi) with torque vectoring rear diffs that truly biases power to the needed rear wheels; rather than using brake on the side with limited/no traction.

Which BMW xDrive vehicles have torque vectoring besides the X5M and X6M? I am assuming these two do because of Dynamic Performance Control.

I see the negative comments about braking the inside wheel, but What is the difference between what is described in the X drive video and Torque Vectoring? Just how does the Torque Vectoring system work, if it does not apply braking to one wheel, whether that is with the brakes or with a device within the diff?

Torque vectoring does just what it says, 'divides' the torque and applies the higher torque to the outside wheel, in the bend. So rather than brake the inner wheel with its subsequent losses, it 'powers' the outer wheel to assist the turn, without compromising the inner wheel, which braking does.

Braking the inner wheel is a compromised solution, same as an e-diff is (braking the spinning wheel), compared to the 'full cream' limited slip diff.

That is my point. The differential cannot generate torque, it can only divide it between the wheels. I think this can be done with braking or it can be done with some sort of clutch arrangement that engages one side and disengages the other. I know what torque vectoring does, my question is how does it actually do that?
