E91 Navigation greyed out and function currently not available

Hello, need help for subject issue.

I have 2011 320d E91 LCI.
I had factory original navigation CIC business system 6.5'' monitor, road map Turkey 2010. No retrofits before.

Bought and replaced with professional system 8.8'' monitor and Pro head module 80 Gb, Road Map Turkey Premium 2019. It was coded exactly for my car.

When I received the package, it was mounted easily and quickly by electrician.

All functions was working perfectly including Navi. Then, frm module in malfunction but fixed. But after 10 minutes, showing message ''function currently not available'', the Navigation was greyed out in the menu. If hard reset, I see navigation option in the menu for a few seconds and then is greyed out again.

Seller said electrician did something wrong and dropped activation navi with the computer. And sent my usb card with 4 files to reactivate. (activator_my.sh, bmw.sh, copie_scr.sh and startl6sss.sh). Files in fat32 formatted usb, inserted into glove box, blinks but nothing happens in 30 sec.
I can export music via usb port to CIC HDD.

People says it needs an FSC code again. I do not want to run an emulator.

How am I supposed to get the CIC pro navigation working? How to re-activate it?
(I still keep original CIC business system and HU with me).

Thanks.

i hard reset my cic while it was navigating and after it booted up navigation was greyed out and pressing the nav button would just say the function is currently not available. I let the car sleep and it came back after that. If its a FSC problem then check status with fsctoofs

OP.

Ok, sounds like the cic has been script activated and when the FRM was done, the scripting has been deleted somehow (did they flash the cic??).

you have 2 options.

1: FSC code your unit to your cars vin (this is the way that BMEW do it).
2: script activate the cic again (this works but is not ideal).

1: you will need bmw coding tools and various bmw software to do this.

2: download the scrip and do the following.

format usb to fat32
copy file to USB root folder (copie_scr.sh)
insert USB into CIC

it will make script activation and reboot the CIC if successful (red screen)

Tried to attach the file, but system wont let me Pm Me

NOTE: this is from an online source, its not my solution, so use at your own risk.

I have 3 copie files of different sizes . Which size is the correct one to script activate? I read that it only works on C1A update.

the file must be called copie_scr.sh and its 101k in size.

only a file called copie_scr.sh will work from the USB port as that's the only name that the cic will accept from the usb port.

the script can do a few things but it must be called copie_scr.sh

Pm me your email address and I'll email it to you

Hi!
I recently did the same thing with the 101K file and SA620 now works. However, all other FSCs are rejected and FSTOOL2 fails to write new ones in. Now my nav greys out sometimes.
Japanese Map is discountinued for 2 years now so I'm not too concerned but still annoying. Any insight?

I wonder if it's something to do with the hard drive. I have this greyed out for about 2 years and even the dealer could not fix it and told to get a new unit.
However, to my surprise today I noticed that it lit up for about a second and greys out again. I can't express how happy I was seeing that Navigation not grey for the first time in two years even for a second. Lol
I hope someone could shed a light on that intermittent grey out situation.

ccfj1 - Somehow I run into same "Navigation" menu in CIC greyed out scenario, twice (!).

1) 2009 E91. ssd installed, 2022-1 NA Maps
While loading 2023-1 NA Map update car went to sleep and then Nav failed to load.
Restored backup image into SSD, re-ran 2023-1 upgrade - no issues so far.
The media partition was functional at all times.

2) 2013 E70. factory hdd, 2022-1 NA Maps
While upgrading to 2023-1 car went to sleep and the Nav failed to load.
No disk backup image, no idea what to do next.
Media partition still functional

panic ... help

Can I use the E91's image on E70?
Any chance a specific partition run out of space that could be cleaned up?
Can you please advise on recovery scenarios?

was the e70 using premium maps like the e91 and were they both at the most recent firmware (that checkmark on the screen)?

my sense is to recommend that you try the e91 drive image cloned onto an e70 drive provided that you are aware of this post on this forum which states there is a vin specific key in partition 10 and vacating that partition may make things work (as i read it).

also, and however, seeing that only the nav failed to load but the media portion stuff is functional suggests that the drive itself is okay (maybe?) and potentially you can just copy over the map stuff from the e91 drive to the e70 drive and create a "good" image for the e70? by taking an image of the failed e70 drive and mounting it alongside the working e91 image and copying the partition contents over.

this also has the great advantage that in doing so you may not have to upgrade maps!

this is just a starting point and not tested advice, as I am not 100% confident in this procedure but seems like a fun test

both on the same NA Premium. Need to check on the CIC firmware, thanks.

It appears that there is no issue with the disk (making a backup image now, going full PATA speed, no hiccups/noises).

I think this is promising path.

I have Micron mSATA SSD, ordered adapter.

Also ordered CF and its IDE adapter.
I had issue in the past where E90 (but not E91) CIC refused to recognize newer mSATA IDE adapter

So my action plan is
1) backup HDD
2) restore backup into SATA SSD
3) play with QNX and SATA SSD to get myself familiar with partitions and filesystem layout.
4) copy "good" maps data from E91 over to SATA SSD
5) clone SATA SSD into both CF and mSATA.
6) try both (CF and mSATA) in the E70

According to QNX, E70 drive partitions are as follows.

/dev/hd1t77 hbnavi : healthy, mountable but no map data (other files are present)
/dev/hd1t77.1 hbcddb: healthy, mountable
/dev/hd1t77.2 hbdata : healthy, mountable
/dev/hd1t77.3 hbuser : corrupted, not mountable
/dev/hd1t77.4 hbmedia : corrupted, not mountable
/dev/hd1t77.5 hbdebug : healthy, mountable

chkfsys was not much help

I'll try to load E91 disk in QNX to compare next

Jagaer opjose - any thoughts?

im so curious to see how this turns out.

a million years ago i had a computer that had an intel 486 in it. i had built it, and it had run flawlessly for at least a year when out of nowhere one morning it seemed like my boot disk just disappeared. Having lost drives previously, I just trashed the drive. Later I discovered that the section of the motherboard which connected to the drives was what had failed, and the drive itself (which I had trashed the previous day) was totally fine.

whoops.

the point of all of this is that the interface on the drive that connects to the CIC is what could have failed, and the data itself could be fine.

As such, I wonder if before you replace the e70 folders with the e91 folders, you might be able to mount all of the e70 data folders on some new medium (ssd or CF card or whatever) and see if after copying the whole e70 drive image structure those folders now read as mountable.

It turned out ok, though recovery path was painful.

- recreated previously corrupted hbnavi, hbuser and hbmedia partitions
- copied data from E91 disk image backup into these 3 partitions only
- imaged CF card.

I am back to 2020 Maps, but with functional nav.
CF card feels super fast.
I'll do 2023 upgrade later in the fall

CF card clone note
select 8192 block size when using dd on macos to write image back to CF card .
The default 512 is super slow (512K/s with 19MB/s)

Lesson learned
Do not repeat my mistake - have at least one full disk backup before any operation, including map upgrade
