Can't comment on them being discontinued. There are others though. Just type in "snow sock 255 18" "snow sock 225 18" in the search?!?

Just ordered a set of flea bay... My road has a dangerous incline of 1:1000000000 and my wifes Z4 never moved in the snow last year so my auto 335d will be worse still i suspect! Hope they work... I'm in Herts so no snow yet but it will be!!!

Guys - you have a £30,000 plus car . . . and you are trusting it to be controlled by a £45 pair of socks. You are asking for 300 (or what ever) horses to grip on to snow via a pair of what are basically underpants . . .

Dont be silly - just buy a set of tyres and be safe.

There are reasons why folk in Europe don't allow cars with a pair of knickers fitted to their wheels drive up mountains.

I can imagine how an insurance co is going to react to a claim when they find out . . .

Nobody is going to claim that these are the answer to winter. But as an answer to the 3 or 4 days of snow that we've had in the last couple of years they mean that you can get to and from the roads that have been ploughed and gritted they do a great job.

Whilst they have not been approved for use in place of chains, a number have been TUV rated to at least ensure their safety. Let us also not forget that the tight clearances of many cars prevents the use of chains.

I'd also look to getting some new underpants Cap'n as if they are that rough you're going to get a nasty rash!

However, when all's said and done the car is sitting on winter tyres now.

captain, whilst i accept ur idea i have only just got my car and it it 4 years old but has 3 brand new RFT's on 18's.....I would love winter tyres but i want 19's (225m).... My plan was to muck thru this years 1 or 2 days snow with a set of underpants. ;-)
I will save up for summer for a set of 19" 225m and then a set of winter tyres for my 18" 225m?'s

Any better ideas gratefully received.....

Well, they're not designed for mountain driving or indeed excessive speeds or distances, and luckily Norfolk is quite short on mountains. Or indeed hills.

However, the council permanently untreated close I live in has a 5mm drop from the top to the bottom and that is enough to defeat my "£30,000+" motor car, when £500 (or maybe even £45) Fiestas traverse it with ease. £45 seems a lot cheaper than 4 winter wheels/tyres that will get a week's use a year to get me 150m to the main road (and back)! And you can store the socks in your car a lot easier too.

PS I did quite like the knicker analogy though!

Remember the winter tyres are optimised for cold weather conditions, not just snow. So running summer tyres through the winter period will increase braking distance and also affect handling.

i dont think anyone is trying to say these are an alternative to getting winter tyres, but for those of us you cant afford or justify getting winter tyres with the amount/lack of snow we get in areas like London then these are a very good piece of kit to have in your boot in case you get stuck.

Ahhh, cannot comment on Autosocks, but in my post #24 above, link to Goodyear socks on eBay for 255/35/18 which are 193M's [rear] size.

Tis in the BMW brochure though (or on the BMW website).

Are the goodyear ones on fleabay considered as good as the weisssock ones? Are they all much the same quality or is there a marked difference?

I have a set of winter wheels ( Renault Clio

) but my wife uses this mostly and I think the socks might be a solution if I get caught out away from home.

The car will never need to drive more than 8 mile on them.

No idea tbh! Google reviews? Would have thought that 8 miles was quite a distance in any snow sock?

Probably being a bit lazy with the 8ml. Thats the distance from my work to home. The worst case scenario I can think of. 6ml of that will be a trunk road so may get away with 1ml either end of the journey if I was caught out.

I tried google before posting and doesn't give much. Just people obviously saying they are not as good as chains in the ski resorts and such.

I've opted for socks after seriously considering winter tyres. The most I have to drive is 9 miles to work and last year in my E46 the only problem was the 200 yards from my house to the main road. I don't think I'll be keeping the 335D long enough to justify spending ££££ on new wheels and winters and I flatly refuse to put steels on it. I was going to just put winters on my current wheels I'm not sure tyres are meant to be taken off/put on every few months (it cant do them any good?).

I'll see how things go, I've been a BMW owner for 6 years now and the only time I've been stuck was last winter which I'm hoping was just a one off.
