Eh, I am well outside that mileage range AND already have upgraded turbos. If I could get BMW to pay for those turbos that would be sweet.

Guess you don't read much, the N54 was not forged. Vishnu and FFTEC have one pulled down for testing and said it's just a very high quality casting. Regardless, it's one awesome engine!

The M division will extensively rework the N55 before they claim it as a 'performance engine'. The fact that the N54 is a forged engine block probably had something to do with it's selection for the 1M.

From my understanding correct me if I am wrong but earlier models had the following forged.

Crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons are forged. I also think the Bentley manual lists both the crankshaft and the con-rods being forged.

lol, not at all, most of the time an actual regional technical engineer has to come out and approve the turbos, its is very rare for them to replace them because it has to be proven the wastegates failed and caused the turbo to fail. so if you blow your turbos because of a tune and wastegates are fine, then youre SOL. and your local dealers cant detect or identify a vehicle that was tuned and returned to stock, but the the regional engineers from bmw can.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!JUST TO BE CLEAR SO ALL YOU DONT GO RACING EVERYONE IN TOWN THINKING YOUR TURBOS ARE COVERED IF YOU BLOW THEM UP, TURBO FAILURE HAS TO ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY NO DOUBT ABOUT IT BE CAUSED BY FAILURE OF THE WASTEGATES IN ORDER FOR BMW TO PAY FOR THEM.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm now at 81,800 miles and would LOVE to bring mine in to get the wastegates fixed. Rattle isnt on the awful side but still apparent...now how would I fight the dealer (since mine [ridgefield BMW] is the Worst as far as customer service) to get them to do the repair and not bullshit me with the "it's normal" excuse till I'm out of the coverage range???

OH MY GOD. NO.

Even with rattle you aren't covered. It has to be clanking and the turbo has to fail or be failing from being beat to death by the wastegate. I don't know why everyone is cancelling their extended warranties because "turbos are the only thing I was worried about". The document is explicit. That doesn't mean you can't haggle with the dealer, but don't plan on getting free turbos because you have rattle and definitely don't plan on getting free turbos with no sound at all....

Okay, who is going to ask if this applies to 335is next?

Hi guys,

do you know if it is also valid for Europe? I have my 335Xi with 90kkm milage and I have this rattle. It's not really annoy me, but still good to know if it can be fixed.
And if so, should I go to the dealer where I bought it or it can be done in any?

Thanx

I'm unsure if having DP's voids my chance of the dealership replacing my turbos through this...?

So, it's a wash in terms of performance. N55 is also a more fuel efficient engine due to the addition of Valvetronic and implementing a single twin-scroll turbocharger. The judges were misinformed

Once you get your F30 I'll put mine to stock and we'll switch cars and I'll let you be the judge on which car has more "kick in the pants"

so how exactly do we make it look like the wastegates caused the turbo to fail ? just out of curiosity not like i would be doing anything fraudulent with this info ?

I would disagree here.
Any failure of the turbo mechanism would be covered if you have not modified your car.

That means impeller coming apart, bearings, etc. There is no exclusion that says it must be wastegate related to be covered.

That's exactly how I took it but it seems like everyone is saying otherwise and that turbo failure has to show evidence of coming from the waste gate mechanism.

yep just went through it again and my SA told me it has to be directly tied to faulty waste gates and they have to be able to replicate the problem at the dealer. For those of you that don't know what a faulty waste gate sounds like here you are:

A reputable socal shop quoted me $1400 for labor to replace both turbos. They said this is about 15 hours of work.

The turbos are $695 each so the total comes out to $2790. This is roughly the same as the gold extended warranty.

But the problem is lately, it seems so damn hard to get the dealers to approve anything like warranty fixes after 50k miles. If my turbos are shot or wastegates are going, atleast i'll know my money will be spent on fixing the problem. While BMW may just hold your money hostage while trying to deny you of legitimate repairs.

Most people dont wait until it actually fails to fix it. If there are symptoms, i think most people would want the problem fixed than continue driving until BMW deems it is so bad it will leave you stranded.

Couldn't agree with you more nuke granted there is other stuff that can go wrong that warranty would cover as well but I feel like I would rather roll the dice at this point than argue with the warranty companies if the time comes
