'06 model - I-Drive knob Spinning out of control

So this has happened to me twice so far... of course my warranty ran out about 500 miles ago, and now i'm getting this weird problem. After i started my car, waited about 1 minute, and all of a sudden the idrive knob started to spin like crazy! damn thing sounded like a airplane taking off. it slowed down and after a minute stopped again.

Has anyone else had this issue, its happened 2 times so far and it's a bit freaky! Thanks!

2006 and *I think* early '07 3-series with iDrive have haptic feedback built into the knob, which was removed from later production models.

So the older idrive knobs had the ability to move by themselves? weird, and I have no idea what haptic feedback is. Is that like force feedback?

Sort of. The clicks, resistance and stopping points are all artificial and correspond to what you're doing on-screen. With the engine shut off, the knob can be spun freely with no resistance at all. So while the knob has the ability to move by itself, under normal operation it should not.

Edit: If you're spinning the wheel to scroll through a list you're going to feel an artificially created bump between each song, upon reaching the end it will prevent you from going any further, you could keep turning but it will return to it's previous position when you let go.

It's also freakin' annoying because there's an ongoing bug where on some screens, it doesn't understand that there's more than a page of content (e.g., Traffic Information or the Address Book)

What bothers me is when I'm trying to scroll through a list of songs, I don't understand why the controller couldn't have been programmed to spin as opposed to reaching the end of the page (onscreen) then me having to twist the knob x amount and hold it there as I feel the clicking.
