Have gotten the low coolant level icon twice. Don't really want to trek up to the dealership to get the BMW fluid. What alternative fluid is compatible?

I am not 100% but I am sure others will work but is your dealership that far away?

There are a few aftermarket coolants that will work, but I dont think you will find any of them at the local walmart or autozone.
Please dont use regular coolant, most of it is highly corrosive and will wear out parts faster. Since its the summer and you are not that low, I would just add distilled water. The BMW mix is 50% coolant and 50% distilled water anyway so if the mix is 45/55 coolant/water it wont make much of a difference. Infact you could run on distilled water alone if you wanted if you were only in warmer weather. So two options, run to the dealer, or run to the super market and add some distilled water.

Evans NPG+ Waterless Coolant is another one but not easy to find.
Again if you aren't horribly low I would just add some distilled water.

Personally, I would add in distilled water + water wetter for now and visit the dealer to get the leak investigated thoroughly.
Don't take your chances with aftermarket coolant. The additives could be corrosive |

Just use distilled water and take it in. It's a closed system and if you're losing coolant then there's a problem.

I had the light too.
The container was empty! Called the dealer and they said it was "normal" due to evaporation but asked to bring it in to check. They recommended against anything other than BMW coolant. Or just pour water. I took it in and they top it off. Had no time to leave it so they just asked to keep an eye on it and bring it back if the light comes back on.

Before you buy antifreeze, do your homework. Some of the advice given here is good; other advice is, well, not as accurate as possible. Fwiw, I like Zerex products and here is a link to their website showing which products we can use. As a side note, I have always added distilled water to antifreeze when changing out. If I really needed to get somewhere and my fluid level ws low, I would add water until I could change it out.
Here's the link: http://www.valvoline.com/zerex/pdf/Z...d=1B5D1AEA1AFC |

I have used Water wetter on my E46 with a 50/50 BMW coolant and distilled water mix. It does lower the temp slightly.

Just got this message this morning, but the next time I started the car (after driving ~20 miles) the message was no longer there. Weird.
I'm an hour from my dealer.. I don't want to go there just for coolant. I guess I'll check the reservoir and add water if it doesn't look too low... |

OEM BMW coolant is zerek G-48 and can only be bought at a BMW dealership as they have a contract with vavoline (makers of zerek g48). You cannot buy G-48 at any retail store, only G-05. The difference between G-48 and G-05 is that the G-48 has a higher pH, no nitrate, and other subtle differences. So the G-48 is more refined than the G-05. Some say the G-48 is better for the cooling system and engine due to less corrosion, some say that its total BS and it doesn't make a difference. It's all up to you as to what you want to do.
