Congratulations o nteh bub, SHane!! I'm sure your wife is gonna let you keep your car. But Maybe not spend any more money, so I'm gonna turn up to your house when you're not home with a $1700 cot and ask your wife to give me that lump of old dirty suspension, brakes and diff from some other old car that's just sitting in your garage for years

Shane. I see you mention your intention to install a M3 diff. I was wondering what diff ratio you were installing. With the 335 MT diff ratio at 3.08 and the M3 MT diff ratio 3.85, I thought you may have chosen a DCT M3 diff with a ratio of 3.154 which is closer to your current ratio.

Well it's almost been 2 years since I had purchased the M3 driveline...
I've been slowly buying parts, and am dedicated to finally getting it installed I have the following bits: Complete rear subframe with LSD halfshafts hubs brakes etc Front hubs and brakes wishbones etc F&R M3 swaybars E92 M3 BC BR coilovers to suit as I have the M3 hubs/brakes Stoptech street pads Stoptech SS brake lines E92 M3 strut brace M3 headlight levelling sensor rod New set of half shaft bolts New set of diff flange bolts 740i driveshaft (this has the flange which bolts up to the M3 diff flange, this shaft is cut in half along with the oem 335i item and the front potion of the 335i shaft is welded to the rear portion of the 740i shaft - Advan have a specialist driveline specialist weld and balance the shaft) 1.5L Motul RBF600 brake fluid 1.5L of bmw diff fluid part # 832 222 82 583, which is SAF-XJ + FM Booster (this was released to quieten down some M diffs which were noisy and would grind - bloody expensive stuff just under $200 for 1.5L by memory) Bits still to purchase (note to self ) new brake sensors 6 x strut brace nuts missing 1 brake line/sensor clip (the one I have is stamped as E92 M3, check to see if my 335i items are interchangeable) The driveline come from a 2011 M3 that had apparently been fire torched with 30k kays or so on the clock (I bought this back in 2013!) Unlike Australia UK cars see a lot of undercarriage corrosion due to the harsh winter months (springs breaking are a common issue on E92's over there!) so fortunately this setup was good for a UK car but it was bloody filthy compared to my car which is a lot older and has had a lot more kays! I cleaned it all down with Sonax wheel cleaner and scrubbed most of the gunk off. 2 years laster I'm getting started on cleaning up the rotors and aluminium suspension components, and stripping everything down and cleaning the hubs etc by removing all the corrosion and then applying a fresh thin coat of grease. I've just used my trusty 18V makita drill along with a few wire wheel attachments from bunnings http://www.bunnings.com.au/craftrigh...h-set_p6310054 Brake rotor before cleaning: After the wire brush treatment I give it a good rinse in a warm bucket of sugar soap and then a rinse with the karcher! After: Here you can see the hub on the left along with camber arms etc all cleaned vs the hub on the right which is still somewhat filthy After cleaning the aluminium suspension parts come up like new: The rotor removed reveals a corroded hub: After cleaning with a thin film of grease applied which shall help ensure when the rotor is put back on it is being mated to a clean level surface (minimising the chance of the brakes vibrating) and prevents the rotor from freezing onto the hub along with the wheel freezing to the hub when mounted also. Still a lot more work to do, and still quite a few more bits and pieces to buy. Hopefully by the end of next month I'll have everything prepped ready for installation by Pete and the buys at Advan Last edited by DR-JEKL; 06-19-2015 at 08:33 AM.. |

Hey mate, how did you get the corrosion off the aluminium pieces? They look mint! Sonax, wire brush, plastic brush?

Don't worry about the sonax, hit it with a wire wheel and that rips all the crud off. Then you wash it in a sugar soap solution or even just use dishwashing liquid in hot water, then rinse with a hose .

Congrats with the baby, I'm sure she will bring as much enjoyment as the car just different. My youngest daughter was just sitting on my lap wanting me to click on all the smilies and now my other two are wanting to see them. Kids are a lot of fun but a lot of time and money! And I know what you mean about the renos... we also have two bathrooms and a laundry to DIY. Your build is looking good.. wouldn't mind doing the same thing to our E91 one day. The suspension certainly lets it down. My BC coilovers have only been sitting in the cupboard now for I think 6 months so maybe I will get them on before next year |

I was going to DIY the coilovers but maybe I should just head down to Advan. Surely it can't cost too much? I'm also hoping they aren't too firm as it is our daily, if so I'd probably have to take them out again so don't want a double whammy. Hence DIY.
This afternoons job is fixing the leaking windscreen washing reservoir on our other car then lawn mowing. |

Ok that's good to hear the BCs aren't too firm. The M-sport is too floaty for my liking though my dampers are probably worn. With the BCs I figure I can always wind the dampers up to fix that when needed

Congratulations on your amazing thread. Helps to have a touch of OCD to pull off such a meticulous build. You certainly excel with attention to detail with impeccable taste. I was particularly amazed with M3 cluster install - quite unique and appealing. By the way, my name is John and am also from Newy. We are a generation apart, but I am a retired consultant metallurgist also with a BMW habit. Bit surprised that our paths haven't crossed in Newcastle as our profession is quite rare even in Newy. If your group of buddies is motoring out in the countryside it would be great to catch up. Needless to say, got plenty of questions. My car has the 19" 313 wheels like yours. What would you recommend for maximum spacers to fill out the guards with stock tyres (225 & 255)? Where did you get them and how much? Thanks in advance. And congrats on the new family. |

Did you ply your trade at BHP? I started out at Comsteel as a teenager fresh out of high school and almost 20 years later I'm still there! TBH my role as a metallurgist, is more so process improvement these days... Yeah sure, we occasionally head out the putty rd or go for a blap up through morpeth, lambs valley up to singleton etc I have the BMS spacers, 12mm & 15mm. When I was running a 255 rear I was using the 15mm on the rear and the 12mm on the front. I upsized to a 265 rear tyre and had scrubbing so am running 15mm front. So in summary you could potentially run 15mm spacers F&R with 225 and a 255 http://www.burgertuning.com/BMW_wheel_spacers.html |

Hi Shane.
Yep, I did over 10 years at BHP and similar at Goninans . Finished up consultant with CW Pope (aka Bureau Veritas). Thanks for the info. I'll be right on it plus a drop on H&R sport springs like Socket did. Awesome stance. I have slipped away from the track days in my old age... more interested in cosmetics atm. It would be great to catch up for a convoy drive some time on those back roads. Eyeball the E92's. |

Good to see you've now got the opportunity to start prepping all those M3 bits in anticipation of having them installed! Probably good to have a target date to work to - helps the motivation. Those bits you've done have come up well and will be worth the effort just to see the installed ...

I almost got a job at BHP, pasminco and landed one @ Comsteel. Funny how things pan out!! You may wish to consider upgrading shocks also with the lowered springs. Most guys say the koni yellows are better than the bilsteins. Personally I would go for the eibachs over the H&R's (Eibachs provide a smoother ride whereas the H&R's handle better yet are slightly harsher due to high spring rates) If you're doing cosmetics you may be keen on a carbon fibre roof wrap, details here: Install with this wrap by carbon demon will be ~ $480 (great value as the going rate for a roof wrap with a generic wrap which is a lot cheaper than this cf wrap is generally $500) http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1140686 |

Well I've finally got all the parts nuts and bolts for thr M3 driveline, all I have to do now is tidy up a few last components and drop her off to advan in a few weeks time!
Today we had our cars wrapped by carbon demon using the vvivid tech art gloss carbon fibre wrap: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1140686 Michael and wendy from carbon demon are fantastic guys to deal with and im so glad we had them do the wrap for us! One of the guys had a really nice 1M which was wrapped by a big name co in Sydney and he had quite a few horror stories to tell regarding that co, whereas Michael & Wendy were fantastic to deal with and treat the cars like they were their own and are super fastidious and passionate about their work. The film to me looked thick like the 3M 1080 brushed black metallic film that I used for my DIY centre console: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...&postcount=450 I was hoping that it would be fine, and quite workable like the 3M wrap... Well it turned out to be extremely difficult to apply, and work with as if any bubbles popped up in the film even though the product is advertised as having micro air channel release it didnt seem to be working... This is why the film looks so convincing as it appears as though the wrap is in 3 layers having a cf weave than a glossy clear film giving it that 3 d effect... Since the guys hadnt worked with the film before they had to adjust from their conventional methods of applying the wrap and really take their time getting everything right. It started to look great than when we were mucking around with the film we realised it has a lift off clear protective film. When that was peeled off this revealed the full depth of the gloss black carbon fibre weave and damn it looked amazing! Unfortunately it took a hell of alot longer to apply compared to conventional films but wow I'm really happy with the results! When the car was outside in full natural light the cf weave really popped and even from a metre away it looked like the real deal! Michael & Wendy weren't entirely happy as the finish wasnt entirely flawless with a few small bubbles which kept popping up near the rear window rubbers, but heck at the end of the day my car has stone chips, a few scratches etc it aint perfect so I'm not going to worry about a few little 2mm bubbles that's in the edges! (the panel itself looks flawless) I didnt think to take pics in the sun and when I got home to Newcastle it was overcast and shitty... I dropped into bunnings to look for a few long boxes to send some wrap to a few boys down in melbourne and snapped a few pics: (these pics are shithouse, in natural light the film looks 1000x times better!!) A few more pics: reflections from my carport roof its that glossy At the end of the day I'm really happy with the job done by carbon demon they went above and beyond to work with the difficult to apply product and didnt charge any extra for their time, and the film looks great! The vvivid product is not easy to work with, and Michael said the adhesive isnt as good as the avery 3M wraps, albeit agreed it looks great and those companies dont have a similiar product to offer. So its the type of film where it takes a long time to apply to get it just right and forget about trying to get it to wrap around curved surfaces unfortunately (Michael believes it wouldn't adhere properly to interior trims and would lift after a period of time) but I'm really happy with the result, and driving home and merging lanes on the M1 I really noticed the difference with the lighter carbon fibre roof lowering the centre of gravity If anyone wants some film please let me know I have some leftover Last edited by DR-JEKL; 07-20-2015 at 03:05 AM.. |
