Vibrations at High Speeds
Hey, I do a lot of DIY and maintenance on my cars, but unfortunately, I'm no good at chassis/suspension problems so I figured I'd ask you guys.
I ran into a curb at a very high speed the other night while turning left (dark/wet conditions, brakes were very faded from a bedding procedure). Both front rims were warped, both tires had chunks missing. Afterwards, I noticed a vibration that I can feel in the steering wheel, the accelerator pedal, as well as the floor of the vehicle. I can hear a very faint grinding/low sound from underneath the car as well. I've had the rims and tires all replaced, and as I stated, the brakes were brand new before this so I don't think those are the problem. Had high speed and road force balancing done on the wheels and alignment done on the best Hunter machines but the vibrations are still there. The vibrations start every time I hit 60-65 mph, continues up to any higher speeds, and braking does not affect the vibrations (but dropping to 55 mph or below does kill the vibrations). I noticed that turning my steering wheel about 20+ degrees to the right stops the vibrations as well. Can anyone give me a diagnosis on this problem? I'm thinking control arms or tie rods but I don't know damage to which side would fit the symptoms regarding the steering. Thanks in advance. EDIT: Should add that the grinding noise isn't continuous. It grinds for 2 seconds, pauses for 1 second, repeat. Last edited by shadowx360; 06-19-2014 at 12:00 PM.. |

Vibration is usually caused by one of the following
Bent rim warped rotors control arms or bushings. Since you hit a curb I would rule out the control arms. Most likely your issue is a bent rim since you had that looked at then your problem would probably be with the lower control arm. |

Thanks for the advice. I originally thought it would be the wheel bearings due to the vibrations only coming on around 60 mph, but would the angle of the steering support or discredit that idea? I really appreciate your feedback.
EDIT: Noob question, but is the control arms you are referring to #9 or #14 on this diagram? Last edited by shadowx360; 07-03-2014 at 12:06 PM.. |

I had the same issue and at first (everything under warranty) BMW replaced my pads and rotors. They looked at my wheels and one of them had a slight bent thanks to NJ winter roads, and the wonderful maintenance done on them. Come May I had my rims swapped out and still had the issue. Then in mid-June I got them to replace the control arms and no more vibration.

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-23...FQxp7AodfEUAYA Another way to tell if they are fucked is to slam the breaks. Drive at about 10MPH and have someone watch you. Then slam the brakes in front of them and have them see if your front wheels shake. |

My symptoms were similar and mine was a wheel bearing.
My car had some sort of impact before I got it. I didn't feel anything during test drive but I wasn't as in tune with the car then. A few weeks into ownership I realized the wheel was bent. Just two days ago, after months of tying to figure it the vibration, my dealer replaced the wheel bearing/hub under CPO and all is well. I have a thread in this forum about it.

My thrust arm bushings are going bad as well. Dealer pointed them out to me on my last maintenance visit awhile back. Do you guys think this would be ok to drive on a road trip? Or definitely not? driving about 550 miles one way, so around 1100 miles round trip.

I didn't pay anything. A wheel bearing really shouldn't be failing at 56k miles. I've had cars go well over 100k and never need them replaced. Also the car was CPO'd and had the issue when I got it. I just didn't know it wasn't normal until later and it got worse over time.

Hey guys,
I currently own a 2012 328i xDrive coupe. I recently replaced the steering rack boot, tie rods, ball joints, sway bar links, control arms, and tension struts recently.. I also got my passenger side rims fixed because they were bent. Heres my problem: When driving between 65-85, my front wheels seem to vibrate/rumble. Going 65-75 it’s barely noticable, and then once you reach 80+ it starts to rumble in the front. Any suggestions? |
