Great find! 500 bucks for a rebuild sure beats a new one.

UPDATE: I got to the tank (thanks to info. in this forum) and during the process I realized that the whole unit was very light (at this point I realized that I was supposed to first pour in some DEF to see if that would get rid of my codes). I'm not sure if it was by coincidence or from reading info. in this forum, but I'm glad I purchased the inverted torx sockets. One of these was needed to get the exhaust lowered. I almost muddied my pants when I removed the supply/delivery module (I thought I broke it when I twisted it). I removed all of the crystallized DEF, cleaned the connections, and started filling the active tank. I saw the fluid level in the active reservoir go from almost empty to almost full. I buttoned everything up (almost everything- left out a few of the weird metal cap,washer-looking, twisty bolts? and the plastic battery nut thing). Can you tell that I'm an internet-mechanic? I cleared the codes with Carly and fired her up. About 400 miles later, no SES light (for now?). I will use Torque to check readiness codes (smog test due in October). Crossing my fingers. The car seems a little less intimidating after getting in and out of the tank.

This works and saved me a ton of $$$.

I bought the RTD as mentioned in this thread and performed the tasks as described. It absolutely works, got rid of my 2 codes for temperature short circuit.

The only thing I changed was I added a short piece of fuel line hose to the overflow vent to keep the crystallization from forming on top of the tank and around the DEF pump. I opened the pump as I was cleaning to see what was inside. Pics attached.

First pic shows where there was a huge ball of crystallized DEF on the overflow. This pic was after I had chipped most of the DEF away. Last pic shows a piece of fuel line I attached to the vent so any overflow will be overboard and away from the top of the tank.

This is by far the most money saving post I've run across given what BMW wanted to replace the entire DEF tank. Another example of the great ideas the guys in this forum come up with. Thanks!

Next up for me is getting rid of the glow plug issues, and maybe some CBU work. And a meth/water setup if all goes well...

I think that the crystallization on the vent is because that people overfill the tank. There is a BMW bulletin that mention that overfilling the tank may damage the tank.

I only put DEF in the passive tank when I get the LOW DEF (900 miles countdown) light. I then add only 2.5 gals at a time.

Glad to hear it, Dave! Like you, I rationalized the money I saved could purchase a meth injection system.

Couldn't tell from the photos...did you get the thermistor inside the active tank? Also, I didn't take the white module apart. What's that round disc thing?

The RTD is in the tank.

I fished it down inside the rubber grommets on the tank top where the other wires are routed. You can see the black/black wire with white trace near the yellow wire tie in the bottom picture.

The round metal disc thing is the picture is part of the DEF pump. It is shaped like an old school bicycle bell and it spins on a shaft. You can hear and feel the pump trying to move fluid when it spins...

So took the car to my uncle's shop and was able to change the temp sensor. Purchase the sensor from https://www.adafruit.com/products/37...FZEXHwodYEoMyA just like QUIKDZL, Pretty simple to get to the tank. The only hard part for me was getting the sensor through the cap of the tank. After everything was done the SES went away right after I started the car.

Yeah, fishing that sensor wire through the crowded grommet was a challenge. I used a small screwdriver lubricated with silicone grease and pushed it through the grommet and wallowed it around to create some space for the wires. Then, I used some forceps (needle-nose pliers would work) to grasp the wire about 1/4" from its end and push it through the grommet from the underside. I pushed the wire through in very short increments until I could grasp it from the top side and pull it.

Great job!

Can anyone help me with the P205b error with my 2009 BMW X5 35d? I live in Toronto, Canada. The dealership quoted me CDN $2,500 for the part alone, plus labour.

Thanks in advance!

The most fun way to fix it is probably to get a Stage 1 tune and just code out the SCR. JR is local to the GTA area so it's nice to be able to have Jarek tune our cars in person.
You can keep all the other stuff, EGR, DPF, etc... and you'll have a lot more power. But that won't address any of the CBU issues you'll experience in the long run if you plan on driving this car for many years to come.

Which dealer did you go to btw? I went to Town+Country BMW and they quoted me $1900 on a new tank. Though I'm in a 335d and not an X5d.

You can get a refurbed tank from Xemodex:
http://xemodex.ca/ca/product/def-scr...epair-for-bmw/
They're local to us in the GTA as well and you can either swap it yourself or have a shop do it. If you don't want the dealer bend over prices, PM me and I'd be happy to recommend a GTA shop that I bring my 35d to. I find their prices to be fair and they do good work.

Assuming the temp sensor is the bane of your problems, the cheapest way to fix it is to splice the harness and put in your own temp sensor. $4 sensor and a day of work if you can do it yourself. Page 2 in this thread if you missed it. You can get a sensor to splice in here:
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00KHSU9DS/...I2XGASSTY380JK

Any of those options is better than $2500+.

VW toureg part fits on X5 35D urea tank and costs only ~$230.and it should fit 335D as well.Just double check.

Some things to consider before replacing your active tank

I got the P205b error a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, BMW Canada wouldn't honor the warranty for Canadian owners that BMW NA has extended to X5 Diesel owners in the US. Anyway, I would like to share the things I learned while researching the solution to this issue:
- BMW does not allow you to replace just the defective sensor. You need to replace the entire active tank+sensor+everything else. Tag price in Canada is $2,300 plus hours of labor.
- If you are handy, you can get a VW part to repair the problematic part and save tons of money.

Best:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=888793

Good:
http://xemodex.com/us/product/scr-co...eturn-for-bmw/

- The 7L6198970A is the newer version of 7L6198970. Use that one.
- The 7P6198970A has shorter cables, so don't be tempted to get that one, as it is the wrong part.
- Site to check whether BMW NA will cover your vehicle: http://bmw-rp.com/production/isg/bmw...bmw_portal.nsf
- BEFORE you embark on repairing the issue, make sure you are using the right OBD2 tool. A lot of the knockoff bluetooth tools out there will make you think that you are resetting the code and that the solution is to replace the problematic part.
-- Get the right tool and make sure that there is a real problem
-- Top up your DEF fluid in both reservoirs, and drive for a few days. Then reset using the right tool.
-- If the issue doesn't get fixed, consider repairing using the details above.

Good luck!

DEF Tank Giveaway

I have a recently-removed, functioning DEF tank somebody can have for the cost of shipping, if they want it. I imagine it would cost probably over $50 to ship, but probably depends alot on destination. Pickup for free near Denver, CO.

Hi,

I started getting the 4D32 error now too and i'm in Canada where its cold. What's the worst that will happen if I simply ignore and not do anything about the code.

Thanks,

Do you still have the tank? If so, I'm in need for one!

Garage List
It was good to hear that a $2 RTD fixed the problem. I have just started getting a P205B error code and ordered some RTD's. Following your advice I went with P/N BC2647-ND which has 39" leads. I only found two lead length options - the 2 inch lead version (P/N BC2647-ND) and one I bought with the 39" leads....I figure with the latter I can simply cut them to the appropriate length.

Anybody run into p209f after applying the thermistor fix? Active tank temperature sensor codes are gone but now getting this one related to the control module / wiring.

Just wanted to mention that I attempted this fix last weekend and it worked like a charm. I did not need to drop the battery support. Also, living in San Diego, I wasn't concerned about temperature so I wrapped everything up and secured to the top of the tank.

Many, Many Thanks!!!

Heater module went after the temp sensor. Gave up, replaced the whole control module with the VW one.
