2018 winter build cont

Weekend 4

So the build continues, and this weekend it was focused on getting everything in the engine hooked up, and the car started

What may not be apparent to those following the build, is that when you change the exhaust manifold on a ST set up, basically all the associated pipework (DPs, hot side cp etc) Oil and water lines, heat shielding, wiring etc all needs to be redone. Basically keep the turbo, chuck everything else out and start again

Its a time consuming, frustrating game of millimeters getting everything to fit together without rubbing, kinking or melting from being to close to something hot Don't under estimate what a massive pinta the process is, custom fabricating everything to play nice together.

Lucky Vince is patient and a perfectionist when it comes to this stuff I only the other hand would have cracked it by now, poured petrol on the car and watch it go up in flames

So Saturday was spent making up new oil and water lines. After a few attempts using the aeroflow fittings with the wrong braided hose, we gave up and went to the local Speedflow shop and purchase some nice new hoses and fittings. 30 mins later, hoses were done and installed... Easy when you have the right parts

Next the waste gate actuator arm needed modifying, so Vince knocked up a new one on the lathe and after a few test fittings, the turbo was in and bolted down for the last time (hopefully)

RevSpeed let us down with the down pipe, so we had to fab up a temp DP which just cost $$$ that did not need to be spent (thanks RevSpeed)

While Vince was on the welder, I got to work on cleaning and painting the hubs. The Rays don't come with center caps, so the rusty hubs just look crap, a quick sand and a coat of black rust proof paint and they look much better (pics to follow)

Then it was time to put the radiator support back on, including a nice new CFS radiator

Sunday and with the turbo in and radiator support in place, it was time to fit the coolant hoses and charge pipe, fill it up with fluids, do some coding and see if it would start.

Now that the car is a manual, the routing of the coolant lines etc is different to the auto, Which means nothing hooks up the way it use to, which means, chuck stuff out and fabricate new parts !!!!! Hardest job was finding 2 1/2 inch intercooler pipes and silcon elbows on a Sunday Autobarn Clayton to the rescue, so armed with the right bits, Vince fabricated up a new pipework for the lower charge pipe and soon it was all hooked up and ready to go.

Power steering fluid, coolant, oil and some fancy programming on the laptop and we were ready to crank it over and see if it would start....

At 03:06 PM on Sunday 26 August 2018, spcgry fired up.... smiles all round

Pics below

Pic 1 - $50 gasket from BMW Melb. Same part $8 from anywhere else !!!!
Pic 2 - New water and oil lines for the ST
Pic 3 - New pulleys and serpentine belt (may as well do them while we are here)
Pic 4 - spcgry on a drip
Pic 5 - Unicoil is a product that lets you bend heater hose in neat shapes.. see
Pic 6 - Temp DP
Pic 7 - CFS radiator fitted to radiator support
Pic 8 - Radiator support and FMIC installed
Pic 9 - Engine bay complete
Pic 10 - Air filter and temp DP in place and ready to see if it will start

Close up of temp air intake and exhaust - not sure we car drive it on the road like this

Hahah Kookie, not planning to leave it choo choo style

The whole point of the new mani and all the ST pipework was to drop the 7670 low enough to fit under a stock hood

Sorry mate no power scroop V2.0 for this build (I hope)
