Porsche, I can understand for someone who self confessed has never driven a 330/5d auto and is in the early 20s and into classic/basic cars and Porsche's a diesel BMW is probably not going to float your boat - and nothing wrong with that.

But, FFS to come on a BMW forum and say that auto and diesel does not go is just a bit bloody stupid imo seeing as about 90% of the 6 cylinders are sold with this combo and BMW designs the car around this set-up.

Is a 3 series diesel auto the best / most involving drivers car in the world, clearly no.
Does the auto box suit the car for comfort, easy performance, sporty drive and doing what it says on the tin. Well yes it ticks everybox and buy any current car magazine and there recomendations will also say it's the best.

Is a 997 GT3 more fun. Yes, is a Merc s class more comfy, yes. Is a Volvo estate more practicle, yes.

BUT and the big bloody but it is a good comprimise of all these characteristic and hence any 'everyday' sporty car that can play most of the parts above and be a good drive.

Phone a BMW dealer, book a test drive in a 330/5d Auto and go and have a proper drive in it and come back with an educated and hopefully unbiased opinion of what you think of the car then.

I DARE YOU and then tell us what you think of it. One thing is for sure it will not drive like the Disco.

My opinion it's a good alrounder but it's not a Porsche when you want to have fun. I look forward to your opinion after having a go.

I was just thinking the same. I came close to buying an 06 plate Disco TDV6 HSE.

Drove it off road on the test and pootled around in it. Felt pretty good.

I reckon my current car would be quicker, but that isn't quite the point.

Both my previous vans have got stuck in stupid places, once on a hill and once on a field in the middle of summer. Would miss all the space but would welcome the go anywhere option and plenty of pulling power.

I would of course get it mapped.

BTW Have you checked out prices recently?

I would imagine that you could probably get a dealer to give you a Disco for free as long as your promised not to try to trade it back in.

I read somewhere that Stratstone Land Rover dealers were refusing to take any 4x4 in part exchange.

EDIT: just had a look. You can get quite a lot of car for £10k !

They are properly good off road (the dealer I went to had a test track on site) and not a bad drive on road (compared to the 530d I had at the time).

Reliability is a concern though, everyone I have spoken to who had one said it broke ... a lot.

Maybe give them a miss with the reliability issues, probably best go with a Japanese one of some sort.

That's always been the problem with the Disco. Cracking car when it works though.

Land Rover looking to make 400-600 people redundant in the Midlands right now

They are great for towing and off road, my mum does both so that is why she bought one.

If you go off road, get a Landy that is what they are made for.

Prices you are looking from about £12K for a Discovery 3, for a Discovery anywhere from £1000.

I like the look of the Disco 3, and some of the ones for sale have probably had an easy life on the school run. We will see. Thats if Land Rover survive the next few years.

Personally I don't think LR will go down, hope not anyway we on't have many British car manufacturers left but them going down shouldn't make much difference as to you buying one, you will still get parts and there will still be people to fix 'em.

Nothing wrong with it being a working car as such before my mum bought a new(ish) one she looked at some old Discos still going after 170K and mechnically absolutely sound and some used as SRM cars that where mechnically crap, because they just had not been looked after! Chances are you'll probably get as many scratches and dents from the Tescos battle than the average towing work horse, only from what we found, so therefore counts for nothing!!

Just be careful and make sure they've been serviced on time!

Yup. And they want a £1 billion 'loan' from the govt, e.g. us.

All this chatter about Discos has me looking for my platform shoes and white bellbottom slacks.

Yes, I know what you're talking about, too.

No different to all the auto company execs that went to beg cash from the US govt.

I remember one of the committee members asking if any execs were prepared to sell their private planes at the airport and fly back economy. They all declined

Still, if you bail out the banking sector then other sectors will have a punt themselves.

My Disco 3 led a sheltered life, school run stuff mostly and to transport my disabled son - 23000 miles in three years. It was generally 'solid' although there were a couple of recalls and some of the trim was a little flimsy. Nevertheless I would certainly buy another one if the time/price was right.

I enquired about buying it at the end of lease (back in May), Motability (the leasing company) wanted £21000 for it!!! Needless to say I didn't buy it. It just so happened that I saw it for sale a month or so later at Fords of Winsford, it must have gone through a closed Motability auction. It was up for sale for £17500 I think. Must be worth about £10-£12K now I reckon!!
