LOCOG & BMW GROUP UNVEIL LONDON 2012 FLEET

26.04.2012

London
, 26 April 2012: LOCOG and BMW, Official Automotive Partner to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, today revealed full details of the London 2012 fleet. Set to play an essential role in delivering a successful Games, LOCOG’s deployment plans for the low-emission, diesel, hybrid and electric cars, motorcycles and bicycles were unveiled for the first time.

Whether it be pulling boats out of the water at Weymouth, providing a mobile camera platform for the marathon, towing a horse ambulance across Greenwich Park or carrying medal winners around the Olympic Park to media interviews, the BMW and MINI fleet will perform an extremely wide range of duties during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Naturally making sure the right people are in the right place at the right time, across more than 30 venues in London and beyond, is another key role of the cars, motorcycles and bicycles which constitute the fleet. Media will be users of the fleet, as well as judges, event organisers, Games officials and staff, ranging from medical officers, IOC photographers and crew to official rights holders and technical delegates.

Richard George, Transport Director, LOCOG said: “From motorcycles to electric vehicles and 4x4s, the requirements of the 2012 fleet are hugely diverse. BMW and MINI have provided a variety of different cars, ideal both for city driving and long distance, to travel to Olympic and Paralympic venues around the country. It was vital that our partner in this field could deliver a one-stop shop solution and meet our sustainability targets. BMW has surpassed our requirements and we are delighted to be working with them.”

LOCOG’s challenging average fleet emissions target of 120 grams CO2 per kilometre was set significantly below the UK total new car emissions average of 138 grams CO2 per kilometre / 54.2mpg. (Ref. CleanGreenCars.co.uk) The BMW and MINI fleet surpasses the target with average CO2 emissions of 116 grams CO2 per kilometre or 64.5mpg.

Chris Brownridge, UK Marketing Director, BMW said: “Our London 2012 fleet shows what BMW technology can achieve today in terms of fuel economy and low emissions, including the first major presence of super clean EU6-compliant cars on UK roads. We look forward sharing our vision of sustainable urban mobility during the Games, including our revolutionary electric vehicle technology at the BMW Group Pavilion in the Olympic park.”

Beyond the vehicle requirements, BMW Group is supporting a significant number of Team GB and ParalympicsGB members and hopefuls. More than 140 individuals around the country are receiving backing in the form of vehicles, support and encouragement.

In addition, the technical facilities of BMW Group were put to good use to help test the Olympic Torch ahead of its 70 day Olympic Relay around the UK. The company’s state-of-the-art Energy and Environmental Test Centre in Munich was used to test the torch in all manner of different weather conditions, from 5ºC to +40ºC temperatures, +50mph winds, snow and driving rain.

This is why my bloody car is delayed!! Nice fleet of nice cars but NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE FREAKING OLYMPIC GAMES!! 4 million Britons are expected to leave the country during the games - can't blame em! Thankfully I'm up north (swamp donkey land) and out of the way, but getting about down south which I may need to yet will be a pain.
Nice though... The car's, nothing else.

They get sold to customers. These vehicles are marketed as Bimmers used at the Olympic games, which means they'll probably be priced the same as a new car right off the showroom floor.

You might not care, but perhaps you live in a bubble and don't realize that the Olympics will be watched by billions of people around the world.

This strategic partnership between BMW and the Olympics is great.

Nice to see they didn't just add some lettering and went for proper vinyls all the way. Looks great, especially the MINI!

The model mix is interesting.

I am a little surprised to see so many SUVs and sedans but and no touring or 1 series hatchback models. I would think that an F20 116dED would be just fine in some of the cases where the F30 320dED will be used instead, for example.

I'm certainly not in a bubble! Yes, I understand it will be watched by billions but not one person I have spoken to inside the UK gives a flying proverbial! I mean £9.3bn is a ridiculous spend of money in economic climates like this. All for what? So some athletes (whom I do have respect for) push themselves to the limits. Meh, maybe I'm just bitter but it's also asking for a terrorist threat isn't it... I sincerely hope there isn't but it wouldn't surprise me if there was at least a "bomb scare".
Just my opinion though...

Too bad BWM doesn't offer an electric motorcycle - that would make a lot more sense for filming the cyclists so they don't have to breath the exhaust (however clean) coming from the R1200 RT Motorcycle.

One of my big pet peeves while running road races is breathing exhaust from idling police cars. Don't get me wrong - I am glad they are there to stop crossing traffic.

Call us names all you want. We said the exact same things before going into the 2010 Winter Olympics that took place in Vancouver. It ended up to be great, and the consensus after the games is that it was money worth spending. The infrastructure built for the games (new Skytrain line, Vancovuer <-> Whistler highway upgrade, Olympic speed skating oval converted multi purpose facility) have all been well used afterwards.

From wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Winter_Olympics
Quote:
A final audit conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers released in December 2010 revealed total operation cost to have been $1.84 billion and came in on budget resulting in neither surplus nor deficit. Construction of venues also came on budget with a total cost of $603 million.[13]

PricewaterhouseCoopers' study estimated a total contribution to the BC economy of $2.5 billion of Gross Domestic Product, and as well created 45,000 jobs and contributed an additional $463 million to the tourism industry while venue construction by VANOC and 3rd parties added $1.22 billion to the economy.

Yes, Canada have hosted epic failed Olympics before (Calgary, Montreal). So it can be good and it can be bad. It's all on the execution.

Geez, hope you can find a work around to maintain productivity! I really feel it's going to have very many bad effects on the UK economy and businesses.

Excuse me? I'm not calling anybody "names" as I want, merely expressing my opinion on the London 2012 Olympic Games. I'm glad Vancouver still manage to utilise their stadium but I think an outlay of £9.3bn for some grunting athletes to push themselves in a new UK stadium is absolutely mental, criminal even, when we have so many other serious problems that need addressing such as poverty and homelessness - on which we spend >£20bn already per year. As mentioned by another poster, businesses are going to be hindered through even simple things like traffic on the road! London and the south will be in absolute meltdown. Then the oxbow lake special of pollution and "sustainable ecoism" - smog city!! I could go on!
