Ok so this would be how to repair your cup holder. First I would like to excuse myself for my english (I'm a spanish talker) if you dont understand it once again I'm sorry! This will also be my first DIY post and never have done this including pictures so I'll try to do my best.

First remove the trim covering both cup holders. I didn't took any pictures of it because it was pretty obvious that you need to remove it before being able to reach the cup holders.

To remove the trim surrounding the cup holders you need a small screwdriver in order to pry the trim out. Start by the area nearest to the door. Then do the center and then the one nearest to the center console. Pull carefully not to break the trim.

Now remove the 2 screws holding the cup holder to the dash and then remove the CH (Cup Holder).

Now you have to carefully pry open the cup holder, dont worry nothing will pop up. You can pry it open with a knife or screw driver by prying on the tabs 4 on each side of the C.H. and 2 on the back. PICTURE #1

Then you proceed to remove the little gear or sprocket on the rear of the C.H. You can remove it with a little knife or screwdriver it will pop up easily.

Once out you can proceed and split both the case and the moving C.H. tray. You can do this by inserting some plyers or big screwdriver right in the midle of the and pulling them apart. PICTURES # 2-3

When you divide them, you will be able to see where the spring is supposed to be attached. It will be right behind the left mounting screw hole is located. In my case, a little piece of the plastic that's supposed to hold in place the spring was broken and thats why the spring came loose. So what I did was to place the spring back in place and bend the tip of the spring a bit in order to make it grip to the plastic casing instead of the little area where it is supposed to be. If you can see in the picture, you'll be able to see that the spring tip is almost grabbing like a hand to the case. PICTURES # 5,6,9

***WARNING*** dont put too much pressure on the spring tip or it will break. I thought it was going to be a bit tougher but it broke. So I had to manage and unbend a bit of it in order to recreate a similar tip that would fit and grab the case. Pic # 9

Once in place, you can go ahead and carefully insert (without taking out the spring) the cup holder tray back in place.

When you do this go ahead and push the tray all the way in in order to lock it from coming out.

Once locked in place, you can go ahead and push back in place the little gear or sprocket ( you may want to try to push it in the other way if it doesnt glide in the first time or you may rotate the gear in order to fit it in place)

Now all you have to do is put the lid back in place making sure all the tabs are in its place.

Now install the C.H. back in place and place the trim that covers both C.H.s in and that would be it!

Remember if you are working on your car and you dont cut, scratch, bang or bruise yourself, you didnt complete a good job! PICTURE # 8

Once again I'm sorry for all the errors this would be my first DIY post and obviously didnt had a good camera on hand to take good pictures.

I was thinking that a good glue might also do the trick once the spring has been bent and placed back in place. But it has to be a glue like EPOXY because Krazy Glue is not going to hold on.

Thank you i just fixed my driver side cup holder using this guide. Tried my best not to break but it broke, bent a piece of the spring to make it work.

Great DIY. I just tried it and it works great, although I also did break a small piece, but nothing that can't be fixed up easily with crazy glue

Had an exactly the same problem - The spring seems to be working now but still something is getting stuck and the holder doesn't comes out about 90% out. I think i will take it in and have it replaced -

If you have trim peeling on the front or have had drinks spill, even a tiny bit to sticky up the mechanism, once you have the 2 main pieces apart (along with the center CH itself), just run them through the dishwasher. Of course without the spring and damper gear.

Nice diy man.. Would do it.. But like how mine don't pop out at all.. It's a struggle to get thm out.. But I like it bc prevent any1 from placing a drink n then popping the drink up with their damn knee.. Pisses me of..Happened once.. So I'ma stay with thm not working ..

Following the previous posts, I went a step further: I split the top cover off of the CH and removed the round plastic gear mesh insert. I then pulled the CH open to its fullest extent and then used a small screwdriver to pry the case upward such that the extended CH was pulled over the plastic stops. This allows the inner CH to be separated from its enclosing sheath. The round spring with it's slightly extended formed end is loose and ready to be inserted into it's slot (just behind the left mounting hole - no pressure, just put the formed piece in the slot). I previously bought a "hitch pin clip, external", 3/8" (p/n 030699252589) from Home Depot for 40 cents. I clipped the long arms off of it and slid the remaining formed circular part around the formed end of the winding coiled spring end - like a horse collar. With the coiled spring at the opening of the CH enclosure, I simply inserted the inner CH back into the unit. The spring coil holder captures the spring coil and everything goes back together as previously described. With this procedure, there isn't any pressure applied to perform the fix.

Thank you. My cup holder also was not ejecting, however after disassembly, I found out the spring was fine. As soon as I removed the gear - POP! my tray shot open. The gear apparently provides resistance to make the cup holder eject smoothly and slowly. Either my gear gummed up, or my spring lost some tension. Looks like I will have a very 'aggressive' cup holder as I was unable to adjust the amount of resistance.

Thank you for the post - the dealer wanted $350 to fix it.

Like many other posts - my spring mount gave out and the door wouldn't pop open anymore. I took it all apart as per the OP's DIY (NICE JOB!).

The only thing I did different is after reading about how brittle and hard it is to re-bend the spring to make it "clip" the side wall of the housing, I decided to heat it up to bend it. I applied a SMALL amount of heat (it doesn't take much to glow red) and easily bent the hew shape with needle nose pliers.

See before and after pics below.

Now it easily and solidly clips onto the housing again. Saved $50 and a trip over to the dealer to buy one!

Don't mean to grave dig this thread but.. Thank you.. Worked it out and saved $50.

I also broke my tip off so I just cut one side of the end to make it a half then just heated it with a lighter to bed it.. Worked great.

Just want to add my thanks to the OP. I never would have figured out how that spring worked without this post (fixed ours yesterday in about 30 min).

Amazing that they rely on that little piece of plastic to hold that spring in place! no surprise that it often breaks off. FYI, I made a thin metal clip with my dremel tool and clipped it on the outside under the spring tips. Now mine is fully metal instead of plastic, so no chance of breaking again.
