DOT 4 vs DOT 4 LV (Low Viscosity)

So BMW TIS and RealOEM call for DOT 4 LV but my dealer don't have it and say even their own techs only use the regular DOT 4.

Has most of you just used regular DOT 4 and have been good? The way it's worded in TIS seems like they really want you to use LV fluid.

Ages ago, somewhere I now can't find, I read that LV has a way higher boiling point than standard. Also lower viscosity for SC, ABS etc to work a bit easier... I'd go for LV every time anyhow; no sense skimping on brake stuff, I think.

Do you have NAPA auto parts stores?

Ok well update, the original fluid dealer sold me does say Low Viscocity on it. But the part number they told me it was didn't match to LV when I searched.

Boiling point is not significantly different. If anything, it's slightly lower when "wet" for the LV. Officially our cars use LV, which is what BMW sells, but a lot of people use regular DOT 4. Here is a good reference:

Yeah I had seen that and it's kinda odd though.

They don't recommend doing track with LV but then BMW says LV only or it can fuck up ABS/DSC systems.

ABS/DSC system isn't cheap so it's why I'm making sure I only use LV but hope I can still do a few track/auto cross fun.

If not people who used regular DOT 4 all around have they had issues, I guess not either...

I don't do serious tracking but I do go at some small tracks and drags for fun.

Don't over-think it. Either is fine in our cars. It won't break your ABS/DSC system. If you want to be cautious, just get the LV as specified by BMW. For track, the non-LV fluids seem to have slightly higher boiling points, especially when wet, but those also typically are/should be changed more often.

In addition to this, the low viscosity fluids are strongly recommended largely for comfort reasons (less perceptible pulsations) and for optimum DSC modulation (valves are calibrated for the low viscosity fluids). There was an article which showed LV fluids allowed for more finer intervention.

BMW dealers should only be using LV.

Lots of OEMs don't specify LV fluids despite being equipped with DSC. Toyota and Mazda still specify DOT 3 fluids in some of their cars

DOT 4 Class 6 ! LV - предназначена для авто оснащенных системой курсовой устойчивости ABS, ESP.
Она имеет лучшую текучесть при низких температурах (кинематическая вязкость при 40С 700 mm2/s).

У DOT 4 - при 40С 1400mm2/s.
