I haven't received my FRM paperwork from BMW yet, hoping to get it soon. Can anyone confirm whether this is a recall or just an extension on the warranty?

Does the software update fix the possibility of bricking? So after the update, the frm won't brick itself?
Anyone tuned would notify the dealer to not flash the dde/ecu and put a note on the dash too!

I think the frm is a warranty extension, so they won't replace it until it fails, and programming they will charge for. They should include the update for free part of the warranty, but then it would be a "recall"?

I had a FRM reflashed for free in Germany when I told the dealer that it would only save them money. Much cheaper than replacing the module.
Yes, the new SW prevents the module from bricking. By the way, it doesn't seem to be the fault of the supplier (Lear) rather than the micro controller manufacturer.

German dealers are run by BMW, correct? In the US, we have the corrupt dealers as franchises, so they wouldn't care unless BMW NA told them to do it and paid for it.

That's good to know because a while back my frm acted up and luckily ista-p was able to recover it by flashing. I was worried about the future but if it's a software issue then I'm good!

I too just received the letter about the FRM. The dealer replaced mine a few months ago under the original extended warranty when they did the NoX sensors. I had no issues with my previous FRM, I think they must have just wanted to do it preventatively.

Just got a check in the mail for $722 -- the full labor and parts cost. Car was at 110K.

Booo.... They rarely ever bring these extended warranties here to Canada.

My FRM got bricked when I was resetting my error codes, but it was my fault because my voltage dropped too much. In any case I was able to recover it by flashing the chip with instructions from Sensible_ here: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1189062

Glad that BMW is refunding your money though.

FRM experience. went for drive to Buffalo from Toronto in x5 35d and had the ELM in the OBD connected to Torque and for fun watching volts, boost, water temps, exhaust gas temps... forgot to remove and ELM drained the battery over night. got a jump from a friendly samaritan who was driving a mdx. at first wouldn't start, then when i increased the rpms the x5 started right away.

lost: windows, stereo, dash lights, signal lights, all way flashers/hazard lights, and some other comfort features (heated seats maybe?)

took it to a guy in Toronto on my return and he charged $100 to fix provided the FRM was removed from the foot well, which we did

short story long, the FRM should not affect any aftermarket tunes???

Cleaning may not resolve your issue. I also had a DPF light. Turns out the MAF went bad needed replacement. It was preventing the re-gen.

I've fried both frm modules on my 335d first, then my x5. My 335d battery died went to jump start it and poof fried, bmw dealership in my area took it right in no questions asked got it covered under warranty. Btw I was just told them the dde is tuned as well as the transmission and they used some third party program that didn't wipe either of my tunes. Didn't seem to bother them one bit that I was fully deleted. They actually thought it was the coolest thing. Got to test out a x3 m340i for a week too which was fun.

My x5 battery died put it on a charger, got a little impatient and started it before It was charged enough and it fried. Same thing bmw took it and did it under warranty. X5s only got trans tune and xdelete so I just reflashed myself just incase it was wiped.

Like others are saying my service guy said my x5 was 156,000/10 years they did it at 92k. My 335d is the same I assume, but it was done at 134k.

Saw this by chance, it's better to write and @ in front of a user name if you want them to know they have been mentioned in a post. I'm not familiar with an FCM module, or was that a typo and you meant FRM? I can help you with that. Please PM me.

Hi Rone2591 , warranty should not be an excuse for your BMW dealer. I'd point them to the SIB that is out for the FRM fault. On a side note I would make them aware that the turn signals are considered a safety item and that you could write complaint to NHTSA (there are several already concerning this issue) which eventually will trigger a research by the NHTSA and possibly could lead to a recall. BMW should have a big interest in fixing the FRM issue.

Went through this recently myself. 2010 e70 35d. Was out of warranty by 3 months and 25k miles. BMW said they would not warranty, though I didn't push since I'm not super fond of the dealer near me anyways. Found several used at local junkyards and did end up with another bad one at first. So I would advise if you go this route to make sure you can get a refund if it doesn't work. Eventually found one from a 2013 (that looks like it has been previously replaced as it had a date code of 2017) for $80. Pretty simple to code to the car with WINKFP and NCS.

My local mobile mechanic reprogrammed mine for $150 from my drive way. FWIW, I did reach out to BMWNA and I did file a complaint. BMWNA will provide the part and I’m debating whether I should replace it not because the dealership wants $500 for their labor.

I just had a tune done on my 2009 335d and now the FRM failed and BMW northwest will not cover this as I am out of warranty?

Anyone know someone close to Tacoma, WA that can reprogram this for me? Thanks
