that doesn't make sense. pretty sure the autos have shorter gearing than the MTs to make up for the torque loss of the AT. Be sure you're comparing apples to apples.

Also, xi's will have shorter gearing on top of that. So an xi AT will have the shortest gearing, RWD MT will have the tallest gearing.

Attaching the chart from my 2009 E91 brochure. RWD in the middle column, xDrive on the right. Looks like AT ratios catches up in 5th gear -- AT 5th = MT 6th.

A couple of things to keep in mind in this discussion:
  • 2011 328i weighs 3428lbs., final drive ratio 3.73:1, MPG claim 18/28
  • 2013 328i weights 3360lbs, final drive ratio 3.15:1, MPG claim 23/33

IOW the F30 has a lower final drive, so its engine is turning 15% slower (and burning 15% less gas per mile) than the E90.

I generally have found that a fairly 'typical' mix of city and highway results in about 18mps, as claimed for my E90 328i. And a recent 650 mile (each direction) roundtrip averaging 75-85mph resulted in 27mpg, pretty close to as-claimed especially when you consider the declining MPG above 60 mph. Very heavy city driving might put me into 16-17mpg but I average most of the time 'about 18 mpg'

09 e92 328i xdrive here. 21mpg combined, but the highways here sometimes get bumper to bumper so can't really say highway. I am sure I got high 20s on longer highway drive.

Thanks for all the good feedback. Since driving back and forth from work the past few days, I have been getting about 19.5mpg, and my commute is basically all city driving with the stop lights and back road stop signs so im happy with getting around 20mpg!

Currently at 20.3, mostly freeway but with average freeway pace of 80mph+. In Seattle I was at 21.9 with shitty traffic and people hugging the wheel at 65mph, in the left lane. Long drives with open roads 27-28 mpg.

Rwd auto e91 gets about 15 in the hills of SF. On the highway 27+.

City is a killer.

When C&D compared the f30 and e90 they saw a ~2mpg difference in average fuel economy when under similar conditions.

Just went on a longer trip and was able to get 28 mpg with an average cruise of 71-72mph, very happy with that

Sorry if this is already a topic, I tried searching but could not find it.

Thanks!
I have a 2011 328i coupe with about 53,000 miles on it. My daily commute is almost evenly split between interstate and streets, and I average 24-26 mpg.

I have a 08 e92 328i RWD AT. I am getting around 13-15 mpg in city driving and about 25-26 in interstate. I usually cruise at around 80mph. I searched a lot as well but could not figure out why it is performing so bad in fuel efficiency.
usually accelerate gently sometimes with a lead foot, but rarely.

It must be standard issue Bay area results. Mine is nearly exactly what you state. 09 e91 328i rwd auto. It doesn't help that CA has such crap gas.

I basically cold start it and drive up steep hills in stop and go trafic. Not very conducive to high mogs.

91 is nothing you need 93. And yes the CA gas sucks!

A stock 328i doesn't need 93. Realistically, the stock tune is meant to run on a minimum of 87. Its not going to make any difference in fuel economy anyway.

What difference if any does using the 93 vs. the 87 make in terms of performance and benefit to the engine?

Small difference in performance on a stock tune. No benefit to the engine really.
